Brookhaven National Laboratory High Voltage Power Supply Engineer in Upton, New York

Apply Now High Voltage Power Supply Engineer Job ID JR101212 Date posted 06/06/2024

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The High Voltage Power Supply Engineer will work with other electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, scientific staff, controls engineers, designers, and technicians developing, designing, procuring, testing, and installing pulsed power supplies and devices for the EIC. These systems provide fast beam injection and extraction for the EIC Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, Electron Storage Ring, and Hadron Ring, serving both operational and key machine protection functions. We seek an individual with a background in high voltage pulsed power and power electronics to assist in the development of these high voltage, high current pulsed power systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Power Supply Systems Group Leader, accelerator physicists, and EIC system managers and engineers to help develop, define, and document detailed requirements and specifications for pulsed power systems

  • Be part of the team that will provide the pulsed power systems for the EIC project

  • Assist to deliver EIC pulsed power systems and components from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed electrical, electronic and mechanical design, 3D magnetic and electrical field modeling and analysis, design, system electrical, mechanical, and controls integration, detailed fabrication specifications and drawings, design and safety reviews, purchase documentation, vendor oversight, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning

  • Provide status reports on these projects through to completion to the Power Supply Systems Group Leader

  • Help to ensure that pulsed power systems and components have well defined specifications for support systems: electrical power, water cooling, HVAC, compressed air, and controls and that they are communicated with the responsible support groups

  • Support project interface management with other accelerator systems to resolve technical conflicts for beamline position, support building space, cable tray space, and other infrastructure systems

  • Ensure that work is planned and executed in accordance with BNL and EIC ES&H policy and procedures.

  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • BS in Engineering, Physics, or related discipline

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant technical experience that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of high voltage pulsed power supplies, power electronics, and high voltage pulsed power devices and systems. Included in the experience base, must be experience on creative engineering projects (collaborating with a team to develop and build unique scientific/technical equipment)

  • Experience with pulse forming networks, high voltage / high current modulators including solid state and vacuum tube switching devices

  • Experience with lumped element magnetic kickers and stripline kickers

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate/interact with and report to senior management and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support

  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals

  • Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project),

  • Demonstrated experience organizing and presenting technical review and status reports

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related discipline

  • Knowledge of accelerator physics and beam accelerator component interactions

  • Knowledge of accelerator power supply systems including precision DC high current/voltage power supplies, ramping and fast pulsed high current/high voltage power supplies, multi-phase diode and SCR rectifiers, linear, switching and resonant convertors, high voltage pulsed vacuum tubes, and feedback control

  • Demonstrated experience with high frequency / RF instrumentation

  • Experience with particle accelerator systems and components working with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop, design, build, and commission similar systems

  • Good understanding of analog and digital technologies

  • Good electrical system testing and trouble-shooting skills

  • Experience with technical software: PSpice or other circuit analysis tools, Matlab, MathCad, CST Studio (3D EM modelling)

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Will be required to climb ladders to varied heights

  • May be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker

  • May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

Other Information:

  • Valid drivers' license is required

  • Some travel may be required
