JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Stelts-Filippelli Special Collections Intern 202 4 /2 5

The Special Collections Library seeks a junior or senior in good standing who is interested in librarianship, archival work, curatorial practice, exhibition making, graphic design, and book and archival conservation for the academic year 202 4 /202 5 . Reporting to the Lead Curator in the Eberly Family Special Collections Library (https://libraries.psu.edu/specialcollections) , the Stelts-Filippelli Intern will support the exhibition and curatorial program in the Special Collections Library by doing research, retrieving and scanning materials, writing and designing labels and other exhibition texts, helping to build mounts to exhibit primary source materials safely, and supporting the installation and de-installation of exhibitions. The Intern will also support digital exhibitions, including building WordPress websites, as well as online promotion and engagement. Focusing on the principles and methods of conserving book and archival materials, the Intern will learn specific methods for proper storage and handling, environmental standards, appropriate exhibition display, and some minor conservation procedures. The Intern will be part of the Community of Practice of students who work in the libraries and will attend monthly meetings and occasionally work on shared projects.

Good communication and collaboration skills, a sense of curiosity, a commitment to uplifting the diverse histories contained within our collections , and some graphic design experience (ideally a basic knowledge of Canva or Photoshop ) a re essential. Additionally, the Intern should be willing to learn how to handle rare library materials and to work on the reference desk to support our researchers after appropriate training .

The intern will work up to 150 hours (10 hours per week at $ 12.00 an hour) each semester. The intern may, at their discretion, apply for academic credit through their department.
