JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The vegetable crop research and extension program in the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University (https://psu.edu) is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Research Technologist position. Typical work duties of the selected candidate include:

  • Assist the principal investigator, graduate and undergraduate students in designing, planning and conducting field, protected culture, and laboratory experiments on vegetable crops contributing to determine feasibility and assuring quality and efficiency of assigned projects.

  • Organize laboratory activities and maintain laboratory, greenhouse, protected culture systems and experimental field in good working conditions, participating in developing research methods and protocols, identifying problems and potential solutions.

  • Coordinate data collection, screening, and management; implement research protocols and interpret results; install, manage and operate sensors, dataloggers and relative software for microenvironmental monitoring, processing lab samples, operate laboratory equipment for plant tissue, water solution, and soil extract samples analysis.

  • Supervise and train graduate students and wage payroll employees conducting experimental activities by explaining and demonstrating protocols or technical equipment and communicating work progress to lab members.

  • Assist in sourcing needed material and supply, ordering supplies and equipment for research and demonstration activities, tracking expenses to keep project budgets in order, documenting costs, and assisting with writing project proposals and reports.

The candidate will be involved in a wide range of research and extension activities aimed at enhancing and developing sustainable vegetable production systems and improving vegetable quality. Some daily or overnight travel may be necessary to conduct research and demonstration activities or to coordinate work with personnel at collaborating institutions.

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Education and experience:

Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred, and three or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with degree in horticulture, plant science, agronomy and related field or to candidates with enough work experience in vegetable crop science research. We are seeking a well-organized, self-motivated and willing to work independently individual. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. The candidate should have experience using computer software and especially Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Power Point. Effective English writing and verbal communication skills are also required.

The ideal candidate should possibly have experience with high tunnel management, irrigation and fertigation system design, setup and maintenance and have familiarity or willing to learn how to operate a tractor and other equipment and should be willing to obtain the PA pesticide applicator certification. Experience with laboratory equipment for chemical analyses are highly preferred.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$42,100.00 - $61,000.00
