JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: We are searching for Research and Development Engineering Interns to join the Communications, Information, and Navigation office of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

You will: Use accepted methods and techniques to assist with the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems. Contribute to experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data. Contribute data/findings for use in technical reports, documents, or oral/written presentations. Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members, engineers, and scientists to accomplish organizational goals; may provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level.

Preferred skills/experience areas include: Applicants must be excellent team members, highly adaptable, highly curious, creative, lateral thinkers. Applicants must have relevant experience or coursework in a field directly applicable or highly related to Data Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Geospatial Sciences. Applicants must have the ability to design experiments, perform analysis, and design or apply meaningful metrics to measure results. Applicants must be able to adapt and learn new skills, to execute specific research projects, and to meet task deadlines and goals. Applicants must have experience with computer programming in one or more of the following: Python, R, Java, C++, or Matlab. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, be dependable, responsive, curious, collaborative, and have high interpersonal skill. Applicants should be pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field of study.

Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. Students are expected to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours per week) and part-time during the academic year for a maximum of 20 hours per week. Offers are typically made by the middle of the spring semester of the sophomore year and most students begin working at the end of spring semester. However, some appointments may begin at the beginning of the fall semester of the student's junior year.
