JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Metals, Ceramics, and Coating Processing Department within the Materials and Manufacturing Office at The Applied Research Laboratory, The Pennsylvania State University is looking for a highly motivated Post Doctoral Candidate to assist with various activities which may include material synthesis, material processing, characterization, and process modeling for the fabrication and development of advanced materials, coatings and material systems for a broad range of programs involving electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD), sputtering (r.f, d.c., magnetron), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), electroplating (Cu, Ni, Cr, Au, Pt), cold spray (CS), and field assisted sintering technology (FAST). Potential materials systems include ceramic, metallic, composite and/or a mixed combination for thermal protection, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, erosion resistance, and/ or optical performance.
Responsibilities include: Assist in designing and conducting experimental research plans to meet program objectives and deliverables Assist in writing proposals, manuscripts and reports Assist in identifying new areas of research thrusts, engaging potential sponsors, and giving project updates and presentations Assist in executing research programs and objectives on a broad range of research topics related to materials and material processing Assist with laboratory schedules, designing coating deposition trials, and performing analytical materials characterization and analysis using a variety of analytical techniques Assist in mentoring Ph.D., MS. and UG students in various fields such as materials science and engineering, engineering science and mechanics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and computer science to assist in preparing our next generation research scientists and engineers Work collaboratively with various faculty and staff members on a daily basis, while providing examples of good work ethic, strong motivation, applied research designs, problem-solving techniques, and fostering a team environment. Compiling data, analysis, and recommendations for a wide range of materials and coatings comprised of nanocomposite, nanolayered, multilayered, functionally graded, and multifunctional material systems for property enhancement and performance on a variety of applications in the aerospace, defense, tooling, biomedical, nuclear, microelectronic, and optical industry
Typically requires a Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering or Engineering Science and Mechanics.
Required skills and experience includes: Knowledge of advance coating processes Knowledge of materials processing Proficient in various analytical materials characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and powder processing
Preferred skills and experience includes: Materials science and engineering, ceramic science and engineering, or metals science and engineering Process development, structure-property-processing-performance relationships, and materials processing
