JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Office of Research Marketing & Communications within OSVPR (Office of the Senior Vice President for Research) is seeking a part-time staff member to assist with strategic writing and content development for the research enterprise.
This position is expected to work approximately 10-20 hours per week helping to support key research content for strategies within several of the OSVPR units, institutes and colleges.
Assignments will be within key areas: Writing research articles that represent Penn State's research enterprise - developing stories that reflect common themes, high-priority strategies, requests which cross multiple research areas, and impact stories across the interdisciplinary institutes and colleges. Research and Story Development: Identify and develop compelling narratives that highlight Penn State's research achievements, focusing on themes that resonate across its interdisciplinary institutes and colleges. Collaboration with Researchers: Engage with faculty, researchers, and staff to gather accurate, detailed information about ongoing and completed research projects, ensuring that the stories reflect the depth and impact of their work. Interdisciplinary Focus: Emphasize the collaborative nature of research at Penn State by showcasing how different disciplines intersect and contribute to the university's overall research mission and impact. Editing and Peer Review Coordination: Work closely with Penn State's strategic communications teams to coordinate, refine and polish articles, ensuring they meet high standards of clarity, accuracy, and engagement.
Thispositionrequires: Medium to advanced writing skills Experience with writing marketing content Advanced abilities around reading comprehension and the understanding of the information being collected The ability to take broad collections of information and summarize down to specific lengths while maintaining the strategies of the piece and alignment with broader goals The ability to recognize information (past and present) that might be relatable under a broader strategy, assemble these opportunities into assets (such as articles), and identify ways to leverage to maximize our goals.
Nice to have: Degree or background in the life sciences An understanding of the Penn State research enterprise Prior experience writing strategic announcements and marketing content for life sciences
This is a remote (or on-site) position with opportunities for local hires to join in-person meetings and team gatherings. Candidates should plan to be available for meetings during business hours (8-5, M-F), but the bulk of the work can be completed on a flexible schedule. The candidate should be self-directed with an ability to organize and prioritize their work to meet established deadlines. Expected hours per week are 10-20.
