JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The High-Pressure Combustion Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State is seeking a Summer 2024 Research Assistant student. This part-time position is backed by the Office of Naval Research as part of a collaborative multi-university initiative to explore the combustion dynamics of polymeric fuels under high-enthalpy conditions. Our experimental research program is investigating fundamental thermal, chemical, and physical processes including fuel pyrolysis, heat transfer, and combustion in varied flow conditions using multiple test rigs to enhance understanding and application of polymeric fuels.
Key Responsibilities: Design and conduct opposed flow experiments in one- and two-dimensional flow geometries (laminar, turbulent counterflow, and crossflow) at the Yetter group research laboratories. Integrate advanced plumbing and instrumentation for precise control and data collection. Ensure meticulous management and organization of experimental data. Provide flexible support to the team, including potential work outside standard hours.
Desired Skills and Experience: Knowledge of combustion and propulsion theories, particularly polymeric fuels. Experience in experimental design and handling high-pressure equipment. Proficiency in additive manufacturing, LabVIEW, and machine vision techniques. Commitment to safety standards in handling hazardous, reactive, and energetic materials. Effective communication Previous experience in similar research settings and topics.
Educational Requirements: B.S. or significant undergraduate research experience.
