JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Materials Research Institute (MRI) at Penn State is seeking a highly skilled Nanofabrication Process Engineer to join our team. This position is part of the Nanofabrication Laboratory, a core user facility that services over 100 faculty user groups and more than 500 independent researchers, including external companies. It is one of the most advanced facilities in the world, working with a broader materials set than any other lab. The lab is involved in developing state-of-the-art micro and nano devices for next-generation computing, sensing, and quantum systems.
The position requires extensive understanding of nanofabrication and materials processing, as well as the ability to work independently and solve complex problems. The successful candidate will be responsible for various processing and metrology tools, process development, performance management, and user training.
Primary Duties:
Project Work: Perform project work for internal and external users, applying engineering techniques and procedures available through the Nanofabrication Laboratory, Materials Characterization Laboratory, and Electrical Characterization Laboratory. Communicate results through documentation, email, phone, web conferences, and formal presentations.
Process Integration: Serve as the primary equipment engineer for the Laser Patterning Tool, Wafer Bonders, vacuum laminator, electroplating bench, and glass etching bench. Responsibilities include process development, equipment performance management, and user training.
Nanofab Safety: Execute new user safety training and onboarding seminars, participate in the facility’s safety committee, and guide revisions in policy, procedure, and training materials.
Back-up Engineer: Develop proficiency on a majority of the equipment in the Nanofab and provide backup support and training on those tools when primary engineers are not available.
Education and Experience: This position will be filled at the Advanced or Senior Pofessional level, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The Advanced Professional level, requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a Science discipline and 3+ years of experience in a semiconductor fab, or a related field. A Master's degree in Engineering or Physics is preferred. Higher levels of experience are required for higher level positions.
This is a term position, funded for one year, with excellent possibility for renewal.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:
$86,300.00 - $164,000.00
