The Pennsylvania State University Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking an EHS Safety Coordinator with broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of EHS and a background in biological research and safety. The EHS Coordinator will work with a group of academic and research units to effectively implement environmental health and safety (EHS) services and programs. EHS Coordinators independently evaluate chemical, biological and radiological, fire, and general safety hazards as well as hazardous materials shipments and waste management practices; implement effective safe work practices in accordance with established departmental standards and advance the PSU safety culture. The EHS internal training programs are developed to provide EHS staff with training on the technical and operational implementation of these EHS programs. Upon completion of the EHS internal trainings, incumbents are expected to independently implement EHS services and programs with a routine supervisory review of safe work practice recommendations for high-hazard operations. Initiate and lead coordinated approaches to address the development and administration of EHS programs and procedures; provide continuous analysis, interpretation, resolution, implementation, and monitoring of programs.

This position is located at the University Park campus and provides EHS support to all University locations (including all Commonwealth campuses and research locations), except the Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine.

Responsibilities include:

  • Promotes the advancement of the PSU safety culture for customers and acts as the EHS liaison for assigned UP research entities.

  • Conducts safety outreach for Departments and areas assigned and coordinates with supervisor to affirm effective EHS programs and service implementation in areas.

  • Participates as a member of the EHS team, providing other departmental staff members with cooperation and support to further departmental mission; provides mutual support through open communication and professionalism, supporting strategies that foster teamwork and interdependence; assists EHS staff, as needed, in related/overlapping duties; provides service to other EHS programs; and works with other EHS staff to develop other programs, as required.

  • Implements the occupational hazard assessment and exposure monitoring programs including chemical, biological, and radiological hazard assessments, respiratory protection, noise and hearing conservation, and ergonomics.

  • Conducts EHS program compliance inspections and assessments in accordance with EHS standards to determine compliance with University Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.

  • Responds as part of an emergency team to incidents involving fire, hazardous materials, environmental and chemical spills, gas leaks, indoor air quality issues, floods, and other emergencies.

  • Participates on the EHS team and provides support to further the departmental mission.

Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's degree in the sciences, engineering, industrial hygiene, or closely related field is preferred; 1-2 years of related work experience in a scientific research, technical, or healthcare setting; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Must be capable of demonstrating PSU-supplied safety equipment and lifting/moving materials weighing up to 35 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be capable of utilizing respiratory protection equipment including negative-pressure respirators. Must be capable of climbing ladders. Must be reachable and accessible for emergencies during work and off-hours via phone and email.

Background check:

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $89,600.00
