Mechanic I Full-Time, Non-Exempt , Support Staff (Campus Facilities) Pay Grade: 7 Pay Range: 22.89 - see support staff contract

Hours per week: 40  Work Schedule: M-F 7am -3 :30pm

JOB SUMMARY: *Repairs and maintains University motorized vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel or electric powered: automobiles, trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, turf-grass, snow removal, chemical sprayers and other grounds maintenance equipment. Participates in grounds maintenance activities and related work as needed. * ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnose equipment, vehicle, and tool malfunctions.
  • Plan work procedures using technical manuals, diagrams, specifications, and related resources.
  • Plan for and perform preventative maintenance on University equipment, vehicles, and power tools.
  • Repair or replace malfunctioning equipment, vehicle, or tool components.
  • Diagnose and maintain equipment and vehicle safety systems including electrical safety lockout controls.
  • Operate and test equipment and vehicles to diagnose and determine if proper repairs and/or adjustments have been made.
  • Maintain inventory records on parts, lubricants, and related supplies. Order supplies, parts, and equipment as needed.
  • Convert grounds maintenance equipment for seasonal use.
  • Perform minor repairs to body panels & trim.
  • Fabricate and make repairs using welding equipment.
  • Prepare time and material estimates for proposed jobs and maintain accurate records of time and materials used to complete work.
  • Maintain and clean equipment, tools, and working area.
  • Assist grounds personnel as required.
  • Assist in event set-ups and moving furniture, equipment, etc.
  • Participate in the removal of snow and ice from University parking lots, sidewalks, and roads; may include shoveling, salting, and plowing.
  • Assist in maintaining grounds; may include all duties listed on Groundskeeper Job Description.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Assignments and administrative supervision are received from the Assistant Director of Campus Facilities -- Maintenance Operations or their designee. * SUPERVISION EXERCISED:* May supervise student employees assigned to the department.

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

High School diploma or equivalent

Michigan Certification or ASE equivalent in at least four categories of the first eight categories in automotive and light truck repair. Equivalent diesel mechanic certification will be alternatively considered. 

Valid Michigan Driver License.
