Senior Design Engineer - Body
Position Summary
Under general leadership, the Senior Design Engineer will design, release, and implement new parts and assemblies with supporting documentation to improve existing products in a manner that demonstrates, “Everything is Important.” This role researches and evaluates products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability and coordinates with other engineering staff to drive projects to completion. Although primarily a design engineering role, the emphasis is on a project engineering approach to driving projects to completion. This role is expected to impart to coworkers a working knowledge of the automotive industry by working side-by-side with and within our talented teams in a cross-functional manner.
This is an onsite role in Torrance, CA.
We are seeking an engineer with carbon and sealing experience.
Essential Duties
Conceptualizes and creates mechanical designs using design software SolidWorks and/or Catia V5 for new products used in late model air cooled Porsches restored by Singer Vehicle Design
Researches, plans, designs, and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, engines, machines, and mechanical systems for prototype and production purposes, quality system development, and data collection and analytics
Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems
Plans, executes, and initiates process improvement (such as Lean or Six Sigma)
Evaluates existing drawings and 3D models of assemblies and processes
Develops testing processes, and perform testing and validation of new designs
Creates working prototypes for first article fit and function testing
Reviews and approves 3D models and 2D drawings and specifications as created by junior design engineers
Collaborates with Design and Production Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality and Production teams
Interacts (technically) with suppliers and contractors where required
Performs detailed documentation to track project development and design process
Ensures project timeline is met and projects remain within budget
Identifies indicators for improvement and cost reduction opportunities
Creates product introduction materials; work instructions, exploded view parts manuals etc.
Performs all other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering with automotive, mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering emphasis
Minimum of 10 years of mechanical design & drafting experience using CAD software such as Solidworks, Catia, or equivalent
Proficient in CATIA V5
Preferred Education/Experience and/or Certifications
Master’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering with automotive, mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering emphasis
Automotive / Motorsport experience strongly preferred
Ability with 3D printing and scanning technologies strongly desired
Formula SAE student design experience
Experience and capabilities with surface modeling
Experience with ERP/MRP systems
Skills/Abilities and Attributes
Ability to create 2D drawings and 3D models of advanced mechanical components and assemblies
Strong knowledge in Automotive Design, Styling, and Manufacturing
Understanding of design for manufacturability as it applies to DFMEA concepts
Enhanced leadership skills – track record of project leadership a must
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, especially the ability to synthesize large amounts of data involving multiple variables into comprehensive, actionable insights
Pareto Analysis, Root Cause, Corrective Action, or related experience preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill sophisticated subjects to a wider audience
Team oriented, strong ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment and to multiple deadlines
Proficient working with SQL, Excel, or similar data analysis software
Experience monitoring, tracking, and continually improving the total cost equation
Ability to deliver new and creative solutions to sophisticated problems
Physical Demands/Work Environment
Must be able to work in a seated, standing, and/or walking position for extended periods
Must be able to use fingers, hands, and arms at computer keyboard for long periods of time
Must have ability to speak clearly and distinctly and hear and be heard and understood in person and by telephone
Compensation
The starting salary range for this position is between $111,600 - $139,500 per year, plus an annual bonus plan. Actual compensation will be determined by skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
