Howmet Aerospace Quality Technician in Torrance, California

Howmet Fastening Systems (HFS) is seeking Quality Inspectors, Analysts, and Lab Technicians with 1-3 years of experience for the Torrance, CA facility. HFS is a business unit of Howmet Aerospace, headquartered in Torrance, California. We hold the number one global position in aerospace fastening systems, and we’re the North American leader in commercial transportation fasteners. Our high-tech, multi-material fastening systems are found nose to tail on aircraft and aerospace engines. Our products are also critical components of industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, and construction and industrial equipment.

(Inspector) Personnel are directly involved in the inspection of product in the in-process and final inspection areas. The incumbent will use precision inspection tools and equipment, manufacturing drawings (blueprints), and procedures/instructions in their activities to ensure acceptance of product to specifications and requirements. Incumbent must know and perform all other inspections including MRB inspection, receiving inspection, and final inspection. This job reports directly to the Quality Assurance Supervisor.

  • Must be able to read and interpret work instructions, routers, blueprints, drawings and specifications

  • Prepare inspection documentation as required by work instructions

  • Must be able to communicate with multiple departments including Engineering, Manufacturing, Planning, etc

  • Train new employees in inspection positions as required

  • Perform Dimensional Inspection of all characteristics of manufactured products

  • Perform 1 st Article inspection using appropriate drawings or specifications to verify part acceptability

  • Must be familiar with First Article requirements per AS9102

  • Understanding of Federal Aviation Administration requirements and impacts

  • Evaluate MRB disposition for accuracy and acceptability

  • Active involvement in process improvement initiatives

  • Keep work area clean, safe and in orderly fashion

  • Comply with all safety policies, procedure, and practices. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources

  • Participate in proactive team effort to achieve departmental and company goals

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Routine duties are performed with minimal supervision

  • Prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

(Lab) Performs metallurgical and/or mechanical testing on manufactured products. Performing of complex testing of manufactures product due to a broad understanding of test systems, and/or metallurgy. Must demonstrate successful completion of training requirements and examinations for NADCAP accreditation.

  • Performs complex or unusual tests as required to a metallurgical evaluation. Uses and is proficient in the use of instrumentation and control systems, including static and dynamic strain measurement, temperature control and measurement, atmospheric effects, hardness machine, load cells, tensile, x-ray plating, hydrogen determinator, fatigue, stress rupture, etc.

  • Troubleshoots faulty equipment and investigates suspect test data, such as conducting hardness and tensile strength correlation studies, etc.

  • Performs all types of mechanical testing as required, including the calculating, conducting, and reporting of test results. Performs special testing procedures and programs as required, such as investigating/verifying customer returns. Makes recommendations to the Lab Supervisor on improving equipment and test techniques.

  • Conducts a quarterly test fixture inventory and prepares orders for new tooling or replacement tooling as necessary.

  • Provides technical guidance for laboratory technicians less familiar with equipment and procedures.

  • Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.

  • Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used.

Qualifications: Inspection

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures manuals

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Intermediate computer skills including electronic mail, word, excel, routine database activity, graphs, etc

Qualifications: Lab

  • Minimum of 1-5 years of laboratory experience in mechanical and/or metallurgical testing OR mechanical and metallurgical laboratory training relating to mechanical and metallurgical testing

  • High school diploma or GED preferred

  • Able to calibrate and maintain all metallurgical/test equipment in test lab

  • Organizes and prioritizes tasks for fellow lab technicians

  • Can assume leadership role when lab manager is not present if assigned

  • Can assist with audit preparations if required

Basic Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.

  • Minimum 1-3 years' experience in relevant aerospace industry

  • ​Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
