This position is responsible for leading the Company’s income tax planning, compliance and accounting as well as oversight over the commodity tax area. The successful candidate will actively participate in all business decisions impacting income tax and commodity tax, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, contract negotiation, regulatory matters, audit activities, planning and forecasting, etc.

Key deliverables over the near term include developing a plan to strengthen the Tax team’s competencies, assessing the state of compliance/provision processes, risk assessment, identifying and implementing automation opportunities. Canadian Tire is becoming more complex and has interesting growth plans, making it an exciting time to be heading up the Tax team.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and coach the income tax and commodity tax high performance teams fostering continuous improvement and professional development within the team

  • Ensure optimal deployment of resources to achieve business goals including identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency of tax processes by leveraging technology in support of the Company’s vision

  • Support corporate growth initiatives and provide strategic tax analysis and recommendations as it relates to income tax issues impacting the business, including HR matters impacting the taxation of employees

  • Effectively communicate income tax and commodity tax positions and strategies to company executives

  • Identify income tax and commodity tax issues and trends that may impact business activities and proactively work to reduce tax and company risk

  • Compliance oversight in income tax and commodity tax areas

  • Manage the process for transfer pricing, income tax quarterly reporting and the preparation of all required income tax returns

  • Manage external tax relationships including external auditors, advisors and taxation authorities

  • Oversee all income tax and commodity tax audits and quantify any potential exposures.

  • Research and develop income tax-saving strategies.

  • Work with the Treasury team on tax efficient financing structures.

  • Oversee the overall income tax and commodity tax processes including month end and quarter end accounting and and related note disclosures

  • Special projects assistance as needed

What you’ve done

  • Exemplary leader with track record of building effective teams, coaching and developing others

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA)

  • CPA Canada In Depth Tax Course or Masters of Tax

  • CPA Canada Commodity Tax Course an asset

  • 10+ years of Canadian income tax experience with 5+ years in a public accounting firm

  • Experience with a public company, ideally one comprised of different businesses, banners or divisions. Retail, real estate and financial institutions experience is a definite asset

  • Expert knowledge of Canadian income tax and commodity taxes

  • Proficient knowledge of U.S. and international income tax

  • Able to communicate effectively and lead others through change and new strategic initiatives; comfortable presenting to senior management

  • An individual who seizes opportunities and takes initiative as appropriate
