ROLE OBJECTIVE
In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing environment, Takeda is searching for a highly-capable, in-field Senior Manager - External Affairs (West) with experience achieving health policy and patient access objectives through the effective management of external healthcare customer and related stakeholder relationships (this includes: the western provinces, elected officials, political and bureaucratic staff in relevant Ministries; drug plan managers, hospitals, academic and research centres, as well as provincial representatives on key decision-making bodies such as pCPA, PTBLC).
The successful candidate will be therapeutically aligned to one or more of our business units to provide field-level insights and impact analyses but will also be responsible within their region to communicate the value of our products to their customers in order to achieve, enhance and maintain payer coverage for all Takeda products. The impact of activities is of major significance to patients and to the business, since removing barriers to reimbursement is critical to optimize patient access and maximize sales potential.
The position reports to the Director of Government and External Affairs. It is preferred that the successful candidate will be based in the Greater Toronto Area.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Establishes and leads productive relationships with key government officials in their territory (political & bureaucratic) with emphasis on drug plans, cancer agencies and key ministries (Health, Economic Development, Treasury, and other relevant Ministries as appropriate).
Develops and strengthens these relationships to promote optimal access to Takeda medicines.
Establishes trusting relationships with regional patient organizations, KOLs and other regional stakeholders in support of policies that promote access to Takeda medicines.
Monitors provincial policy, legislation and regulatory developments that impact our operating environment and develops and implements strategies to address opportunities and market challenges to enable Takeda to attain business goals in a changing environment.
Responsible for lobbying on behalf of Takeda and registers as a lobbyist where appropriate
Customizes and implements innovative value based payer approaches and executes strategies to assure medically appropriate access for all Takeda products.
Represents Takeda’s interests and informs and shapes relevant policy through participation on provincial industry associations (i.e. IMC).
Provides strategic customer insights to assist Market Access colleagues develop successful market access plans.
Engages with cross-functional regional Medical and Commercial colleagues to inform and develop KoL advocates.
Supports Market Access and Pricing teams by leading relationship management of provincial representatives on pCPA and PTBLC.
Supports the National Lead Patient Engagement and Advocacy by engaging with provincial patient groups.
Identifies opportunities to engage payers early on Takeda select pipeline products.
Provides field insights to support the development of market access strategies and submissions
Maintains in-depth knowledge of provincial drug programs to support market access strategies to obtain formulary access for Takeda products.
Assists with strategic brand planning for new and existing products and provides input into broader marketing plan including development of critical success factors and execution of tactical plans.
Represents External Affairs on assigned cross functional teams, with internal groups such as Marketing, Medical and Commercial Excellence in support of initiatives to optimize patient access
Ensure company compliance with provincial laws and regulations regarding lobbying activities.
Captures and keeps up to date activity log against segmented customers with all In-Field Plans.
Anticipates and plans for changes in government health policies, and when an unanticipated change occurs, investigates issues and proposes strategies for implementation.
Consults all internal resources necessary to fulfill strategies.
Any other projects or customers as needed and agreed upon with the Manager.
Responsible for ensuring a thorough understanding of Takeda’s Code of Ethical Practices, IMC Code of Ethics, and Takeda’s SOPs are strictly adhered to, upholding a commitment to compliance and operates with integrity within all business objectives.
Promotes and conducts the affairs of the company with the highest standards of integrity, probity and corporate governance, demonstrating commitment to the values of Takeda-ism.
KEY CAPABILITIES
Strong understanding of current pharmaceutical industry, payer and market access environment.
Understanding of the specialty pharma business model and the overall healthcare environment.
Ability to effectively translate clinical evidence to a scientific value proposition in order to address the unmet needs of the payer.
Demonstrates an entrepreneurial attitude; Business ownership: pursues ideas and projects that ensure sustainable, long-term success despite odds with perseverance.
Demonstrate curiosity and experimentation to learn, adopt and grow in the digital transformation.
Incorporate digital innovation and technology to improve ways of working.
Education, Licences/Certifications, Experience
Minimum bachelor’s degree (sciences, economics, political science or public administration). Post-graduate experience (training or degree) in a related field preferred.
Solid experience (6+ years) in government affairs related to health policy.
Strong understanding of the therapeutic areas and disease management.
Travel Requirements
- Willingness to travel to regular meetings or client sites, including overnight trips and some international travel, as required.
