We are looking a highly motivated and personable Senior Bridge Engineer based in Ontario. As a Senior Bridge Engineer, you will help lead and grow our Ontario bridge team and support our established bridge teams across Canada. You will be responsible for pursuing, leading and coordinating the design delivery on multiple assignments simultaneously, coordinating the design with other practices, and liaise with our national bridge leader and global engineering design resources, as required. The incumbent should be willing to work in a team environment, mentor junior staff, interact with clients and approval agencies, and assist senior project managers in their deliverables.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and supervise bridge, culvert and retaining wall rehabilitations and new designs including: technical reports, structural analysis, design calculations, quantities, specifications, and calculation checks.

  • Produce technical reports and memos to support design.

  • Perform project management tasks to support project delivery in design and through construction.

  • Providing input and guidance to CAD Drafters, EIT’s, and less experienced Engineers working on projects.

  • Work closely with Project Engineers during all phases of project planning, execution, and closeout.

  • Providing technical engineering services during construction, including the review of contractor submissions.

  • Prepare proposals, project schedules and budget estimates for project pursuits.

  • Perform and review: design and inspection tasks.

  • Work independently and as part of a team.

  • Act as a mentor for junior staff and promote continual development.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients.

  • Other duties as required.

  • You’ll be working mainly from home (unless you prefer coming into the office), with the expectation to travel for client /site meetings and occasional team meetings.

Education and Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.

  • Master’s degree (M. Eng, or M.A.Sc.) in Civil Engineering specializing in structures/bridges from an accredited university.

  • Must currently hold a Professional Engineers License with PEO in Ontario.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • 7 to 15 years’ design experience working on Transportation Structures including: bridges, structural culverts and retaining walls.

  • Practical experiences developing and writing structural design and structure planning reports.

  • Practical working knowledge of structural analysis software (such as CSiBridge or MIDAS Civil).

  • Practical working knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code CSA S6-19 and the MTO Structural Manual.

  • Practical working knowledge of other applicable MTO design guidelines: Semi Integral Abutment Manual, Integral Abutment Manual, Concrete Culvert Design Detailing Manual, Structure Rehabilitation Manual, RSS Design Guide, Ontario Structure Inspection Manual, etc.

  • Practical working knowledge of MTO standard drawings and specifications.

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience working closely with drafting professionals to effectively develop drawing packages for transportation structures. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for this role and experience working with digital markup software, such as Bluebeam, is considered an asset.

  • Ability to effectively coordinate with other disciplines and proactively address project requirements.

  • Provide career guidance (mentoring), direction and support on project work, and support to structural designers (EIT’s). Mentorship is a key aspect of this this role and the successful candidate should expect to dedicate 20% of their time to passing on knowledge and experiences to others.

  • A key to success in our projects is effective quality assurance and quality control. All Transportation Structure projects within Jacobs are reviewed by senior engineers and the successful candidate must be able to utilize constructive criticism and feedback to improve current and future deliverables.

The following items would be considered an asset:

  • PHD in Civil Engineering specializing in structures/bridges from an accredited university would be considered an asset.

  • Additional relevant training specializing in bridge structures would be considered an asset: CISC-Canadian Institute for Steel Construction, CPCI-Canadian Precast prestressed Concrete Institute, CAC-Cement Association of Canada, CSA Canadian Standards Association.

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is considered an asset.

  • Experience collaborating with highway engineers, geotechnical engineers, hydraulic engineers, utility companies, environmental agencies, sub consultants, etc, is considered an asset.

  • Working knowledge of project scheduling software such as MS Project is considered an asset.

  • Fully bilingual in English and French is considered an asset.
