Your role

  • Are you passionate about podcasting and reaching new audiences with audio content?

  • CBC News is looking for an experienced and compassionate leader, who is also an innovative podcast programmer and a proven digital audience builder to head up our Podcasting/Digital Audio work.

  • You will manage multiple teams of producers, hosts and sound designers in development work, ongoing podcast production, and short-run series.

  • You are part of creating the strategic direction for CBC News Podcasts, and are comfortable interpreting metrics and trends in order to pivot strategy and teams as needed.

  • You thrive in a constantly changing environment and inspire confidence in others to do the same.

  • You bring creativity and enthusiasm to the task of strengthening the relevance of the public broadcaster to younger, diverse audiences.

  • You are a strong journalistic leader who understands the JSP and is comfortable overseeing original and investigative work.

  • You have a proven track record of inspiring and developing staff with empathy and prioritizing inclusivity and diversity.

  • You excel at collaborating and managing resources between many different departments.

  • This position reports to the Senior Director of Audio and Podcasting for CBC News and can be based in either Toronto or Vancouver.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic and data-driven leadership

  • Reviews audience metrics and ensures program/podcast teams are considering data in their editorial decision making

  • Oversees pitch processes and ensures they adhere to clear criteria

  • Oversees both development staff and audience building staff

  • Manages a production budget, freelance contracts and staff secondments as required

  • Upholds CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.

  • Answers complaints to the CBC Ombudsperson and monitors and responds to audience feedback

  • Creates a positive and inclusive work culture through feedback, coaching and development of staff

  • Hires and supports the training and development of staff, in both short-term and long-term roles

  • Discovers, creates and implements mentorship and training programs for teams.

  • Works closely with the legal team when required.

  • Works with Managing Editors and other colleagues across the country to achieve strategic goals.

  • Ensures that all CBC policies and procedures are followed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • Ten years’ experience in the media industry, including at least seven in a leadership role

  • Significant team management experience (vision, planning, organizing, directing)

  • Superior editorial judgment and thorough understanding of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Strong leadership skills to engage and inspire creative teams

  • Proven track record in developing employees and providing constructive feedback

  • Knowledge of effective management and change-management techniques

  • Positive attitude and solutions-focused leadership

  • Highly developed interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple changing priorities

  • Ability to travel occasionally as required
