What you'll be doing

As the Employee Relations Consultant (ERC), you will be accountable to provide CIBC HR and business partners with objective, proactive and responsive specialized advice to enable effective HR governance and risk mitigation that contributes to maintaining a positive work environment. You will provide education and may guide team members to ensure that decisions are made that meet the needs of the employee and organization in an equitable, objective and professional manner.

You will have primary accountability of the management, processes, tracking, controls and reporting of Individual Rights Requests (IRR’s) afforded to current/former employees, applicants, contingent workers and board members that pertain to information access and correction requests, automated decisions, withdrawal of consent, right to be forgotten and information requests. All requests are to be handled in accordance with applicable legislation and policies and timelines and engage the appropriate stakeholders, when required. You are accountable for supporting the operational strategies for the function, including developing, implementing and maintaining all technology systems, and ensuring appropriate workflow, case tracking systems, processes and controls are in place.

How you'll succeed

  • Advice, Consultation and Individual Rights - Provide proactive and specialized employee relations advice/consultation to employees and business partners (including senior and executive management) in partnership with the human resources client service teams in order to minimize risk to CIBC relative to employment, individual rights and privacy matters (e.g. reputational, legal, legislative). Support all processes related to IRR’s for current/former employees, applicants, contingent workers and board members. All requests are to be handled in accordance with applicable legislation and policies and timelines and engage the appropriate stakeholders, when required. Support the education and awareness related to IRR’s across the enterprise. Support all aligned ER Services processes/job aids per parameters outlined and in accordance with all applicable policy/legislative requirements. Remain current on changes in the enterprise, external related trends, employment and privacy law and changes to federal and provincial legislation and standards. Advise on, and assist in ensuring compliance with CIBC and external government policies, regulations and legislation. When necessary, involve senior business leaders and/or senior ER resources to ensure decisions are consistent across the bank. Improve partner and client ER knowledge through facilitation of ER workshops (e.g. Education and awareness of IRR’s, ER Services processes etc.). Provide confidential counsel to employees and act as their internal avenue of recourse under the Workplace Issue Resolution Process.

  • Vendor/Relationship/Case Database Management - Support the development of initiatives, projects, key controls and required changes to the GELRP&P case database tool. Support the build/enhancements to the case database tool, including designing new software components, testing and rectifying issues, deployment, maintenance and change management. Support the maintenance and ongoing continuous improvement of the GELRP&P case database and reporting functionality, including a new IRR workstream and IRR controls. When required, support third party governance requirements/assessments.

  • Records Management, Data Governance & Reporting - Support the identification, gathering and analyzing of employee/ workforce and business metrics and information, including IRR volumes. Protect CIBC’s clients, shareholders, and reputation by adhering to stringent data governance standards, processes, and procedures. Support in the generation of all applicable reports before distribution to key partners.

Who you are

  • You have a related university degree or equivalent work experience required . It’s an asset if you have a Employment/Privacy law designation or background and/or CHRP designation.

  • You have comprehensive & current knowledge of human resource policies, practices and processes, particularly in the area of employee relations, employment/privacy law, federal and provincial employment legislation and standards, and labour relations.

  • You have comprehensive consulting and influencing skills in order to convince others to adopt new policies and programs and to recognize the business risk if employee relations issues are not addressed appropriately.

  • You have solid problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to apply judgment.

  • You're passionate about people. You find meaning in relationships and surround yourself with a diverse network of partners. You connect with others through respect and authenticity. You have strong interpersonal skills, and ability to build and manage relationships.

  • You have strong communication and business writing skills sufficient to convey information clearly both internally and externally, verbally and written. Situations may include communicating to executives, groups of employees; or current and former employees or their solicitors in emotionally charged situations.

  • You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complex problems and making sense of information. You communicate detailed information in a meaningful way. You are comfortable with analysis of data and trending; able to translate data into a story that can be easily communicated.

  • You can demonstrate working knowledge of CIBC HR systems and the GELRP&P case database tool.

  • You can demonstrate experience in managing routine access requests/non-routine access requests and IRR’s.

  • I t's an asset if you have previous experience in financial services work environments and understanding of financial services businesses an asset.

  • You can demonstrate knowledge of CIBC lines of business.

  • It's an asset if you have prior experience with project management.
