The Structural Engineer in Data Center Engineering - Civil, Structural, Architectural Solutions (DCE-CSAS) team has the ability to understand the customer demand as well as the technology & business opportunities that exist in order to achieve the organization’s goals. You understand key problems, and propose and analyze multiple solutions to produce the most efficient, cost effective, resilient, and scalable structural designs/remediation achievable.

The Structural Engineer in DCE-CSAS provides the global vision, rationale and recommendations to leadership teams for next-generation Data Center structural design and audit/remediation on new and existing sites, while ensuring current structural systems meet performance and operational standards.

As a Structural Engineer in DCE-CSAS, you are a leader and visionary in your field, working within and leading the work of cross-functional teams that include: technical program management, product management, architectural, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, supply chain management, operations, safety and security, and legal. You will participate in external forums/consortiums to understand current trends and developments within the industry. You will be responsible for leading the global structural infrastructure design, strategy, product innovation and development, and audit/remediations of existing sites. This role will communicate the technical decisions we make to Senior Engineers and will drive continuous improvements with our designs.

Key job responsibilities

As a Structural Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle support to AWS Data Centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. In addition, you will also support initiatives such as new generation/product designs. You will be the ‘go to’ engineering resource for your region when technical advice is needed, and will use your subject matter expertise in Structural Engineering to:

  • Work with a team of multi-disciplinary professionals on a wide variety of conceptual design, build, and retrofit projects at existing Data Center

  • Develop structural models in structural analysis software from BIM model exports such as IFC files.

  • Visit sites to observe site specific issues and develop structural solutions to overcome challenges.

  • Create, review and release Data Center structural improvements and designs.

  • Drive refinements to the Basis of Design, product development, sustainability, and template specifications for structural systems to support continuous improvement of future Data Center designs.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in projects requiring structural inputs.

  • Create, review and release structural design (Request for Proposals ) RFPs.

  • Understand the existing building system in order to create, review and initiate structural audit/remediation and maintenance projects to ensure that the building is operating efficiently and safely.

  • Manage external structural design consultants through the audit, design and implementation of a variety of projects while coordinating with internal engineering, construction and other stakeholder teams.

  • Lead initiatives aimed at improving quality, schedule, consistency or reducing costs to in-flight and future Data Center construction and improvement projects.

  • Work on multiple Data Center build and capital improvement projects simultaneously without compromising safety and availability constraints.

This role is based in Japan and is part of the APJC (Asia, Pacific, Japan, China) team, the successful candidate will lead and support projects throughout the APJC region. Successful candidates may also need to travel to other APJC Availability Zones for project support to the local execution team.

The CSA-Solutions team is a global team and the successful candidate will be expected to support global projects and initiatives as needed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years professional experience in commercial, warehouse, and/or industrial new design using local and/or international Codes, and with sound knowledge of structural engineering conventional practices in concrete and steel structures/details.

  • Experience in working with BIM models.

  • Communicate with English, limited working proficiency in Japanese.

  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally/domestically with short notice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or higher degree in Structural Engineering.

  • Professional Civil/Structural Engineering (PE) License or local equivalent (Structural Design 1st Class Kenchikushi)

  • Experience directly related to Data Center or mission critical facility design including a basic understanding of its MEP system.

  • Experience in assessment (including seismic) and retrofitting/remediation of existing buildings.

  • Experience and familiarity with software based modelling, integration between different software platforms (eg, REVIT, Tekla Structures, Grasshopper).

  • Develop BIM models of up to Level of Detail (LOD) 400.
