In support of achieving excellence and business results through safe, reliable operations, our Civil/Security Design Division supporting Crane Programs is currently hiring for an Engineer/Engineering Trainee .

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Is responsible for the planning, designing, composing, evaluating, advising or reporting on any activity which requires the application of engineering principles in a Bruce Power facility.

  • Maintains instructions and procedures up to date, prepare reports, review proposals from external organizations.

  • Participates in training programs as required.

  • Provides technical evaluations, advice and solves problems in a number of major work areas, in support of commissioning, operation and maintenance of the facilities.

  • Receives assignments from Supervisor as well as identifies potential problems and opportunities in assigned areas and/or systems in the facility.

  • Assesses and evaluates initial disposition of the problems as requiring (1) further review and investigation, (2) abandonment of the problem as being the best alternative.

  • Receives approval and discusses proposed solution, as required with other personnel internal and external to the company.

  • Prepares submissions including cost justification or financial evaluation as appropriate; recommends adoption of the proposal and steps required to incorporate it. Submits these for approval or forwarding if necessary.

  • Prepares as required and on receipt of authorization, detailed documentation of the proposal, such as equipment specifications, engineering calculations, installation, testing, operating and maintenance procedures and the like. Submits necessary documentation covering complete proposal for forwarding to responsible bodies for cost and installation approval if necessary.

  • Discusses installation or implementation with persons concerned, and ensures, where possible, that the installation is as intended.

  • Keeps abreast of maintenance and operating problems and takes action to implement change as appropriate.

  • Cooperates with other departments and organizations in arranging tests and providing appropriate documentation as required.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field and incorporate as appropriate.

  • Maintains and/or updates operating and other specified department/divisional/section procedures. Receives assignments relating to procedures from Supervisor or identifies potential problems and opportunities. Discusses these with operating personnel or others as required to ensure consistency with operating licences, policies, principles, standard practices, standing instructions, maximum safety of operation, minimal risk of damage or loss, optimum frequency of routines; efficient operation and the like. Submits for review and approval.

  • Prepares reports to provide information and data in answer to requests or for historical purposes. Collects, or arranges for collection, and analyzes data from past events or operations. Prepares reports for distribution to various groups, outlining technical details of procedures, processes, results or conclusions and the roles played by various groups or external organizations. The foregoing may include delivery of presentations. Provides explanations and answers to questions received from recipients of reports.

  • Reviews proposals received from other sources. Discusses proposal with originator as necessary to suggest changes or revisions as appropriate. Recommends disposition of proposal to Supervisor in writing for review and forwarding for approval authority.

  • Assists/prepares specifications, for purchasing requisitions for material, services and equipment. Follows up with procurement/supply chain and provide necessary technical services during field installation. Prepares recommendations for spare parts requirements for new equipment.

  • Participates in training programs to further own development and assists in the development of others. Attends lectures, do assignments and write examinations.

  • May be required to gather and collate data for use in department/section budget or business planning preparation and to monitor variances to annual budget and submits to Supervisor for reporting purposes.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Requires knowledge of physics, metallurgy, mathematics, electricity, engineering and economics to technically understand the operation of the facility.

  • Requires advanced knowledge of one or more of these subjects to evaluate and propose improvements to processes, equipment and systems or to unit safety, reliability and performance.

  • Requires knowledge of English in order to prepare clear and concise reports and recommendations both verbally and in writing.

  • Requires experience to solve problems, to provide advice and guidance, to initiate developmental studies and to make recommendations during the design, commissioning and operation of a nuclear facility.

  • Requires a high degree of learning agility and adaptability in technically diverse environment.

  • Requires strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Requires proven demonstrations of strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making capability.

  • Requires a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, flexibility and the ability to work with minimal guidance in a team environment.

  • Requires commitment to continuous improvement and continuous application of the Bruce Power behaviours.

  • Knowledge of ASME B30-series and associated standards, CMAA (Crane Manufacturing Association of America) Standards, CSA B167.16 (Overhead cranes, gantry cranes, monorails, hoists, and jib cranes), ASME BTH-1 (Design of Below the Hook lifting devices), and the Ontario OHSA for Construction and Industrial Regulations would be regarded as an asset.

  • Working knowledge of CSA S16, general knowledge of the OESC (Section 40, electrics cranes and hoists) and CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) codes is regarded as an asset.

  • Experience in the Nuclear sector with lift plan reviews, lifting and rigging programs and projects, AMOTs and SOWs, project support for crane projects, risk logs for cranes and elevators, and participation in maintenance & test equipment non-conformances and audits is an asset.

  • Knowledge of Crane, Elevator and Lifting and Rigging programs and standards is an asset.

Education and Experience:

Engineer (Occupation Code 670325)

  • Completion of a 4-year University degree in Engineering.

  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) is required.

  • A period over 6 years, up to and including 8 years of experience is considered necessary

Engineer Trainee (Occupation Code 670207)

  • Completion of a 4-year University degree in Engineering.

  • Working towards a valid Professional Engineers of Ontario certification.

  • A period over 2 years, up to and including 4 years of experience is considered necessary.
