WSP USA Mechanical Team Lead in Thunder Bay, Ontario

Our Resources subsector, a key component of WSP’s ERI (Energy, Resources and Industry) sector, supports clients from coast to coast. Over the decades, we have developed a wide range of services, including economic studies, project management, detailed design, procurement, site management, commissioning and industrial programming. This division provides a full range of services to industrial and mining projects, including all services offered in the field of engineering from conceptual and feasibility studies to complete detailed engineering in EPCM, to the closure and dismantling of mine sites. To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking a Mechanical Team Lead to join our Mechanical Team, located in our Thunder Bay office.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, this position will be required to lead and execute the mechanical engineering efforts for the growing Resources team as well as provide management and oversight to local Mechanical Engineering team in Thunder Bay. As a Mechanical Engineer within the Resources team, you will work on both new construction and brownfield projects within the mining, industrial, manufacturing, institutional and government sectors. You will apply your mechanical engineering design knowledge on project work from conceptual design and studies through to project completion. Effective communication, technical quality, cost-effectiveness, building and maintaining client relationships, and providing guidance to a team of engineers and designers are integral parts of this role.

What you can expect to do here:

  • You will take responsibility for ensuring that WSP Project procedures are utilized on all projects;

  • You will provide guidance in the design and delivery of complex engineering projects within the Mechanical discipline;

  • You will provide leadership to mechanical team to ensure effective team development and performance;

  • You will complete feasibility studies and technical report writing;

  • You will support the planning, scheduling, cost control activities in the design as related to the Project Plan;

  • You will be responsible for reviewing and stamping drawings (as required), using experience in interpreting design codes and regulatory requirements;

  • You will establish scope of work for each project or proposal;

  • You will handle the scheduling and expediting work of the mechanical department;

  • You will oversee the mechanical engineering group involved in the conception, planning and development of engineering design, projects, processes, proposals, and estimates;

  • You will guide your team through to completion in accordance with the schedule and budget on assigned major project of high technical complexity;

  • You will assist in the negotiation of critical engineering issues;

  • You will implement and maintain existing and new design standards, guides, and procedures;

  • You will be responsible for assigning and reviewing work of subordinate design engineering staff;

  • You will define scope and create WBS;

  • You will verify scope with client and follow procedures to monitor and control changes on project;

  • You will work with multiple disciplines to understand the cost and schedule impact of changes;

  • You will be accountable for establishing basic design criteria for the project with the client;

  • You will advocate the usage of and confirm compliance with all of the client and corporate procedures;

  • You will collaborate and work with all levels of the organization in a cohesive manner.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Minimum Bachelors in Engineering

  • At least 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience in a consulting environment focused on Mining and/or Industrial clients;

  • At least 2+ years experience in a people management/mentorship role;

  • P.Eng licensed in Ontario;

  • Experience with Revit, Microstation, Plant3D, SolidEdge and SmartPlant;

  • Project experience in mills, smelters, mines, industrial sites, infrastructure, refinery, ports, material handling, pulp and paper are beneficial;

  • Working knowledge of CSA standards, ANSI standards, ASME standards, and other applicable codes;

  • Strong leadership and management skills;

  • Strong critical thinking skills and an ability to problem solve effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a desire to perform design engineering;

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal);

  • French language skills (written and verbal) an asset;

  • Must be able to attend industrial sites and observe all applicable safety regulations.
