Providence Director Nursing Excellence in Tarzana, California

Description

THE ROLE

The Director Nursing Excellence supports the division of nursing in standardizing best practices across the continuum of care and brings a constant focus in achieving quality patient outcomes and safety using innovative and creative methodology. Responsibilities include providing clinical guidance in the planning, implementing and evaluation of interventions and strategies appropriate to the complexities of the Clinical Institutes. The Director also participates in programs of research designed to generate new knowledge and mentors others in the research process. Is effective in translating research into practice and uses contemporary models and theories to instill rigor into clinical practice. Leads and supports others in document development and presentations. Leads program development for Magnet Designation in unification with project directors at the ministry level for designation and recertification. Serves as a catalyst for professional practice development and performs duties in a manner which promotes team concept, caring, and respect, which reflects the Sisters of Providence mission and philosophy.

Major Challenges:

  1. Working effectively at a ministry level as a support to clinical directors and managers, ministry level CNO & clinical operations and system structures.

  2. Balancing different skills and competencies required to deal with organizational competency, while achieving excellent, personable communications as required of the project manager.

  3. Providing information, assistance and direction to multiple levels of leadership regarding quality and safety performance.

  4. Managing multiple projects at one time.

  5. Serving as a positive change agent that translates and standardizes evidence-based practice information into compelling case for implementation to improve care at the bedside.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Actively supports and incorporates the mission and core values into daily activities. Treats all others with respect and demonstrates excellence, justice and compassion in daily work and relationships with others.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information.

  • Demonstrates service excellence and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with others, including patients/families/members, employees, managers, medical staff, volunteers and community members, so that productivity and positive relations are maximized.

  • Consistently demonstrates and incorporates principles of safety and infection control into daily activities as outlined in Environment of Care, Infection Control, and Exposure Control manuals and department safety policies/procedures. Consistently uses personal protective equipment as required and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential for contact with blood, body fluids, chemicals and/or other hazardous materials. Maintains knowledge of work-appropriate aspects of environment of care programs, complies with policies and reports unsafe conditions. Successfully completes Environment of Care HealthStream modules in the required time frames and participates in fire drills and emergency exercises.

  • Assists in developing, coordinating, evaluating and interpreting nursing activities, policies, goals, and objectives to other departments and to nursing staff as needed. Maintains current knowledge of nursing practice standards (ANA, Hospital, TJC, CMS, etc.), nursing department policies and procedures.

  • Incorporates standards of professional practice for nursing administration, ANA Social Policy Statement, and other foundational documents of the Magnet Designation into policies, meetings, strategies, and daily work.

  • Develops, supports, and implements Magnet standards in conjunction with ministry, regional, and system nursing leadership and staff.

  • Orients/instructs new managers, senior nursing leaders, and staff in the Magnet Program and Clinical Institutes.

  • Identifies key partners and team members for each approved project. Leads, trains, coaches and guides team members through completion of each project or document. Completes and distributes project status reports and other reports as requested.

  • Defines and implements process improvements on key initiatives that result in significant improvements in service delivery, increasing organizational effectiveness both clinically and financially, increasing the safety of our environment to those providing and receiving care.

  • Ensures that key metrics are defined, developed, tracked and re-evaluated; and that improvements result in a positive impact for each project or clinical practice. Identifies, gathers, and analyzes all pertinent data, research and/or information necessary to accomplish project goals.

  • Maintains knowledge regarding current development and/or best practices in quality improvement and service delivery.

  • Collaborates with the Nursing Research Council to ensure projects and research continue on track and within timelines.

  • Collects data and develops spreadsheets, graphs, and reports to facilitate communication regarding department or individual performance and to ensure data evidence for Magnet standards is posted timely.

  • Provides support to leadership for nursing interdisciplinary collaboration. May participate in leadership team discussions, decision-making, evidence-based performance improvement activities, committees, and provides project leadership.

  • Recruits, retains, and leads overall process of shared governance.

  • Oversees the Daisy bedside nurse and nurse leader awards.

  • Ensures progress and maintains timelines for Magnet document submission.

  • Reports progress of the Clinical Institutes and Magnet to the Nursing Operations and Nurse Executive Committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (preferred)

  • Master's Degree - Clinical degree: Nursing, APRN or CNS (preferred)

  • Doctorate Degree - DNP, PhD, DNSc, or ND (preferred)

  • Experience with Magnet and Pathways Designation

  • Upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)

  • 3 years of nursing experience at the supervisory/nurse manager level

  • Experience with performance improvement and project management

  • Experience in data analytics and informatics

  • Advanced knowledge of nursing principles, education programs, and application of theory based practice

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in the principles of administration, facilitation skills, adult learning and advanced practice

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in implementing LEAN principles, rapid-cycle change, and other performance improvement tools conducive to the health care environment

  • Demonstrated skills in working collaboratively with others (including multi/interdisciplinary teams) to identify issues and solve problems

  • Knowledge and understanding of responsibilities of a large hospital department of nursing

  • Ability to independently prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines with complete, accurate information and complete analysis of issues

  • Ability to present recommendations and/or decisions and persuade others, as necessary, with tact and diplomacy

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of executives, managers/staff, apply presentation skills at all levels of the organization, and develop presentations and programs to fit the needs of the intended audience

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with executives, leaders, and staff of all levels

  • Demonstrated ability to provide responsive leadership, to coach/mentor, delegate and coordinate work, motivate management and staff

  • Works well as part of a team under both time and deadline constraints.
