The Florida Division of Emergency Management plans for and responds to both natural and man-made disasters. These range from floods and hurricanes to incidents involving hazardous materials or nuclear power. The Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) is the liaison between federal, state, and local agencies. FDEM prepares and implements a statewide Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, routinely conducts extensive exercises to test state and county emergency response capabilities, provides technical assistance to local governments as they prepare emergency plans and procedures, as well as conducts emergency operations trainings for state and local government agencies.

FDEM serves as the lead agency for the State Emergency Response Team (SERT), whose primary goal is the coordination of the state’s efforts during disaster response and recovery. This coordination is conducted within the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Tallahassee. Additionally, FDEM manages the State Watch Office; the 24-hours a day operation tasked with providing situational awareness to stakeholders statewide. After a disaster, FDEM conducts damage assessment surveys and advises the Governor of the State of Florida on whether to declare an emergency and seek federal relief funds. It is against this backdrop that FDEM strives to demonstrate its mission of, “Coordinate, collaborate and communicate with our community stakeholders for a resilient Florida” along with our vision of, “Leading the Profession in building prepared and resilient communities”.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This position will assist in the coordination, communication, and organization of the annual training symposium hosted every June. Individual will need organizational skills to assist in identifying, planning, and tracking training sessions, instructors, and materials:

The duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinate with working group from all levels of government and private sector.

  • Review and analyze training proposals, manage and track spreadsheets, and other documentation related to event coordination.

  • Coordinate and schedule meetings, develop agendas, record meeting notes, and track deliverables.

  • Compile feedback data records to include improvements and establishe best practices for event.

  • Travel will be required to attend and coordinate Symposium.

  • Perform duties as assigned during activations of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), work non-traditional hours, and may be deploy to anywhere in Florida or the United States for up to two weeks at a time or longer, if warranted. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature and may also necessitate reasonable adaptability by the traveler.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled at collaborating with others to monitor and manage large events.

  • Knowledge of event planning, project management, and best practices.

  • Skilled in writing and reviewing documents for accuracy and completeness.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.

  • Skill in collecting, reviewing, and summarizing information with computer software.

  • Intermediate to advanced skill sets in MS Office software (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) as well as the ability to learn new digital programs.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of project management or event planning experience. Work experience in a related field may substitute for the required education.
