Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Law, Native American Studies or a related field;orsix (6) years of direct work experience in one or more related field.

  • Knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)

  • Experience working with culturally sensitive holdings

  • Knowledge and skills in collections management and archival work, including cataloguing objects, and classifying and interpreting data

    Preferences:

  • Knowledge of State laws pertaining to the disposition of unmarked human graves

  • Knowledge of the archaeology and history of Florida

  • Supervisory experience

  • Experience conducting osteological assessments of archaeologically recovered human remains

  • Experience with repatriation work, such as through NAGPRA or equivalent State regulations

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    This position is responsible for coordinating the Department’s responsibilities under the Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) as defined by 43 CFR Part 10. This extends to current collections curated under 267.115,Florida Statutes, as well as to those acquired under 872.05,Florida Statutes, Florida’s unmarked human grave law. In particular, this position:

  • Coordinates the Department’s compliance with NAGPRA. This may include but is not limited to:

  • Preparing itemized inventories for relevant holdings.

  • Identifying consulting parties.

  • Initiating and organizing consultation with consulting parties.

  • Preparing Notice of Inventory Completions.

  • Preparing Repatriation Statements.

  • Organizing repatriation of holdings

  • Acts as the primary contact between the Department and National NAGPRA; Ensures that all documents are promptly submitted to National NAGPRA.

  • Ensures that the Collections Management System is promptly updated regarding the management and disposition of funerary collections.

  • Provides guidance to institutions on split and shared NAGPRA-eligible holdings. Conducts research to ascertain provenance of such collections, including reviewing the Florida Master Site File and associated unmarked human graves cases (872.05,Florida Statutes).

  • Coordinates the State of Florida’s keepsake cemetery program by serving as the primary point of contact for the Department’s agency partners.

  • Supervises one staff member.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and members of the public.

  • Ability to travel and work outdoors when required.

  • Strong computer literacy focused on the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and climb ladders.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.

  • Strong ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing.
