Description:

Infection Preventionists at St Joseph's Health (SJH), under the direction of the Director of Infection Prevention and Control; plans, organizes, leads and controls activities related to infection control.

Job Summary:

Infection Preventionists at SJH are experts on practical methods of preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases. Their work also helps reduce the risk of contagious diseases being carried out into the community. Infection control practices include surveillance, investigation of cases and outbreaks, training of staff members, the development and enforcement of infection control policies, and evaluation of the effectiveness of infection control efforts. If an outbreak occurs, infection preventionists track down the source and implement strategies to control the problem. They must be alert to any unusual illness that could signal an outbreak, a new type of infection, or even the first casualty of a bioterrorism attack. They collect and analyze data, observe staff members' practices, participate in patient rounds, participate on committees, attend meetings, and design and lead interventions to improve infection control.

Education and Licensure:

A bachelor’s degree in healthcare required with a master’s degree preferred. Experience in health care required; clinical experience preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Mandatory qualifications for candidates:

- Minimum of 5 years in a clinical role.

- Basic statistical analysis skills – Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products

- Basic knowledge of microorganisms and their relationship to infectious disease and basic concepts of infection control.

- Excellent communication skills – experience working with diverse groups with evidence of fostering collaboration and collegiality.

Preferred but not mandatory qualifications:

- At least two years of hospital-based infection control experience.

- Certification in Infection Control (CIC) Must be achieved within 3-5 years of practice (or at the discretion of the director).

- Basic training in infection control surveillance, experience submitting results of epidemiologic investigations to reporting agencies, and experience submitting reportable infections to reporting agencies. (i.e... NYSDOH, CMS, CDC).

- Experience in literature and best practice reviews, policy development and education.

Physical Requirement and Demands:

Walking, standing, sitting and computer work.

Work Environment and Safety:

Office and clinical settings. Exposure class I: routine or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, excretions or secretions.

Pay Range: $37.40 - $53.70

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
