Stanley Black and Decker Director- Embedded Software in Suzhou, China

The Job:

Leader, Software Engineering – Stanley Black & Decker is the world leader in Power Tools, Hand Tools and Outdoor Garden Equipment. As a Software Embedded Engineering Leader, you will lead the entire software development life cycle, including obtaining/reviewing software requirements, code architectures, and end-to-end software implementation for our products within the Tools & Outdoor Business Group, working with other functions such as Electronics Hardware and Product Engineering. The ideal candidate should possess a strong background in embedded software system design, C++ expertise, software unit and automated testing methodologies, and the ability to thoroughly analyze existing software systems and initiate new, modular architectures to ensure the achievement of customer objectives while enabling platforming of software modules. Strong track record of delivering software-enabled hardware products, with firmware development for battery powered products consisting of brushless motors, lithium-ion batteries and chargers and advanced product features. We are looking for someone with a drive to win, and hands-on technical leadership to ensure successful delivery of end-user preferred products.

You'll Get To:

  • Provide strong leadership and management to a team of embedded software engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment

  • Drive a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team

  • Oversee embedded software development for power tools and outdoor power equipment, including motor control algorithms, battery management, charging protocols and user interfaces

  • Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for embedded software engineering that aligns with the Tools & Outdoor business unit’s product roads, goals and long-term vision

  • Guide and Lead software verification and validation activities, including design reviews, code reviews, unit testing, and integration testing

  • Identify opportunities for technology advancements and adopt new and innovative software development processes

  • Work closely with the Product Development Leads and Project Management office to develop program schedules, solve technical and execution problems, and report to Senior Management on project status

  • Guide team in refining system architecture based on assessment of progress/challenges during stage gate process

  • Identify potential risks in software development and create strategies to mitigate them, ensuring the products launch on time and with high quality

  • Mentor and develop direct staff and team members

  • Be a Hands-on leader who is willing to dive deep as and when needed

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience using tools for software development and documenting such as Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, PC-lint Plus etc.,

  • Established success in building, growing, and developing fast-paced, highly experienced software teams spanning multiple embedded disciplines

  • Experience developing software applications for hardware and motor drive systems

  • Expert knowledge of embedded microcontroller tools and hardware peripherals

  • Proficiency in C/C++ and debugging embedded systems

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently with high competency and little guidance

  • Good interpersonal communication skills and a team player

The Person:

  • BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Automation or related field. Master's Degree or higher is preferred

  • 15+ years of experience in embedded software/firmware development and integration experience with hardware and software with more than 10 years of management experience

  • Experience developing software for motor controls, battery management and related areas

  • Ability to own direction, technical vision, and strategy direction across multiple projects simultaneously

  • Fluent Oral English is a must.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in Systems engineering

  • Experience in industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, robotics

  • Experience in the design of embedded software-driven battery-powered products such as power tools and outdoor power equipment
