The Environment & Supply Chain Innovation team is seeking a visionary Smarter Chemistry Materials Engineer/Scientist with experience in green chemistry, materials science, or material policy to create and drive best in class practices for safer & sustainable materials across Apple’s supply chain. In this critical role, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference by collaborating with cross-functional teams and industry to innovate and improve materials used in our products, ensuring they meet regulatory standards and exceed industry benchmarks for safety and sustainability.

Description

  • Lead the effort with internal and external stakeholders to define what success looks like for safer & sustainable materials, establishing benchmarks, guidelines, and best practices tailored to the electronics and chemical industries. - Develop a comprehensive framework for evaluating the safety and environmental impact of materials, setting clear criteria for what constitutes a safer material. - Collaborate with design teams to drive research and development of safer chemicals and materials, setting the standard for their adoption across the organization. - Collaborate with product development, procurement, and manufacturing teams to integrate safer materials into Apple’s new product processes. - Guide the development or selection of alternative materials that not only meet but exceed safety and environmental benchmarks, ensuring compliance with current and emerging regulations. - Advocate for and influence industry standards, contributing to the development of new regulations and guidelines that promote the use of safer materials in electronic products in partnership with regulatory and compliance teams. - Collaborate with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners to push the boundaries of safer material innovation, setting new standards for the industry.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 7+ years of relevant experience

Key Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. A PhD is a plus.

  • Knowledge and experience with green chemistry principles and assessing chemical impacts on human health and the environment

  • 5 years+ of experience in materials or chemical product development with a proven track record of defining and implementing parameters for material health or sustainable design

  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills, with ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Passion for sustainability and a commitment to driving positive environmental and health outcomes through innovative material solutions.

  • Willingness to travel 20% internationally

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $151,200 and $227,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
