Amazon Business Intelligence Engineer, Alexa Audio Data and Insights in Sunnyvale, California

Amazon’s Alexa is a cloud-based voice service that powers Amazon’s groundbreaking voice-powered devices Echo, Dot, Tap, and Echo Show. These devices are part of Amazon’s vision to build a computer in the cloud that is completely controlled by your voice. Alexa Audio (Music, Radio, Podcast, and Books) is a key Alexa domain, focused on delivering magical experiences that drive engagement with Alexa.

The Alexa Audio org is seeking an experienced Business Intelligence Engineer who is a master of both data insights and relationship-building. Using a special combination of technical and people skills, this candidate will be the key BI liaison between Alexa audio feature owners and other partner teams. Primary areas of focus will be 1) audio feature launch support 2) defining metrics and KPIs, and deep-diving ambiguous and large data sets.

A successful candidate will be an expert with SQL, ETL (and general data wrangling) and have exemplary communication skills. The candidate will need to be a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, and able to think big while paying careful attention to detail.

Key job responsibilities

  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, dashboards, etc. to drive key business decisions

  • Interface with business customers, gathering requirements and delivering complete reporting solution

  • Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation

  • Continually improve ongoing reporting and analysis processes, automating or simplifying self-service support for customers

  • Perform creative deep dive analyses to explain finding

  • Interact with internal stakeholders to share insights from monitoring and deep dive analyses

  • Drive instrumentation as part of organization-wide programs and enhancements

A day in the life

When we work together, we:

  • Centralize the sprint and consolidate to one queue but still give stakeholder visibility and continue to ask feedback;

  • Advocate knowledge sharing and code review;

  • Avoid single point of failure with a secondary owner as code reviewer, mentor, backup, etc;

  • Consolidate across org initiatives to the same primary owner;

  • Train everyone on the must-have knowledges;

  • Carve out time for high-sev tt, urgent requests, tech debt failure;

  • Favor problem statement other than data requests

About the team

We are a team of 12 made up of Business Intelligence Engineers (BIEs), Data Engineers (DEs), and Data Scientists (DS’s), who bring with deep experience in both business analytics and data science. We cover the data needs of Music, Radio, Podcast, Books, and the Audio Category. Our key internal partners includes Alexa Audio Product Managers, Engineering, Finance, Alexa analytics and science teams; Alexa International, Alexa Analytics and Science Community.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of analyzing and interpreting data with Redshift, Oracle, NoSQL etc. experience

  • Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools

  • Experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines

  • Experience in Statistical Analysis packages such as R, SAS and Matlab

  • Experience using SQL to pull data from a database or data warehouse and scripting experience (Python) to process data for modeling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AWS solutions such as EC2, DynamoDB, S3, and Redshift

  • Experience in data mining, ETL, etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets

  • Bachelor's degree in sciences, engineering, finance or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $89,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
