The Philosophy Department at Stony Brook University seeks to hire a Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODIG ) Fellow who can support our department's commitment to inclusive research and scholarship at the intersection of philosophy, art, and criticism. The PRODIG Fellowship is designed to (1) increase the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pipeline for retention and support of these candidates. The successful applicant will have competence in research and teaching in the history of philosophy and the philosophy of art, and a demonstrated track record of art criticism. Fellows in the PRODIG program bring a commitment to these principles in research, teaching, and service in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
PRODIG Fellows are full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track lecturer positions appointed at an annual salary of $80,000 with comprehensive state benefits. Start date is Fall 2025. Fellows are part of a mentored research environment, with a modest teaching load. At the completion of this two-year position, fellows with an upward trajectory of scholarly achievement and a demonstrated contribution to inclusion, diversity, and equity will be invited to join the tenure-track faculty at Stony Brook University through an internal promotion process.
The successful candidate will have explicit plans for contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion; excellence in original research and scholarship in philosophy and the arts; and the teaching mission of the department, which includes a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education in the history of philosophy. We are seeking an effective teacher, a mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels guiding research and professional development, and an active participant in community outreach activities. During the two-year appointment, the fellow will meet with university and departmental mentors for discussion and support as their research progresses. Discussions will center on paths to academic excellence and success, the experience of diversity and inclusion, ways to overcome barriers, and factors that facilitate belonging and engagement.

Required Qualifications:
Eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship. Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) or relevant terminal degree from an accredited institution completed prior to start date. Demonstrated personal, academic, and/or work experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; paid or unpaid work in community service or; experience in working with underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.Preference will be given to candidates who are:
- Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.
- From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
A complete application will consist of the required Application form plus: 1) a cover letter that addresses the criteria for the position, 2) CV, 3) sample of representative scholarly work (no more than 3 publications), 4) required applicant essay, 5) research statement, and 6) teaching statement. Additionally, the candidate should arrange for the submission of up to three letters of reference.
The required applicant essay is a response (750 words or less) to the following essay prompt:
"Please describe how you've engaged, facilitated, and/or enhanced diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Examples could include personal, academic, and/or work experience and may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/ community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations."All documents should be submitted online via Interfolio.The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
