Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of directly related full-time experience, or a combination of higher education course work and work experience totaling four (4) full-time years may be considered. Three (3) years of full-time relevant experience including Laboratory Safety. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Safety, or a related discipline. Additional years (4+) of full-time relevant experience including Laboratory Safety. Laboratory Safety experience in a large academic institution. Experience in the use of laboratory management and/or compliance software system(s). Knowledge and experience working with various regulatory agencies and regulations (e.g., OSHA, NIH, CDC, PESH, DHS). Experience providing live training for targeted audiences on laboratory safety topics. Knowledge and experience working in laboratories (graduate or undergraduate level). Experience working with Institutional-level Safety Committees (e.g., IBC, IACUC, Laser Safety, Laboratory Safety Committees). Professional Certifications related to safety, such as: Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar.Brief Description of Duties:
The Laboratory Safety Specialist has responsibility for developing and implementing laboratory safety policies, procedures and programs that ensure safety and compliance in academic and research labs. This includes performing inspections, developing procedures, reviewing lab protocols, conducting laboratory hazard assessments, reviewing lab registrations, and providing training. This position will implement programs to train and monitor High School student programs and activities, and will provide guidance and support for laboratories, makerspaces, machine shops and art studios. This position will also provide support for chemical hygiene, biological safety, and laboratory security initiatives. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
- Laboratory Safety and Compliance:
- Perform documented laboratory inspections and assist with informal laboratory reviews.
- Conduct laboratory hazard assessments and assist with review of laboratory protocols and procedures.
- Conduct laboratory hazard assessments and assist with review of laboratory protocols and procedures.
- Assist with the implementation of a new Laboratory Management System, ensuring compliance with registration requirements for laboratories. Provide training, assistance, and support to users of the system.
- Provide support for chemical hygiene, biological safety, and laboratory security initiatives.
- EH&S Policies, Procedure and Training:
- Develop and implement training programs directed towards increasing safety awareness and reducing injury and exposure in laboratory settings.
- Develop, review and revise EH&S safety policies, procedures, handouts, and other published guidance on a regular basis, including monitoring and updating website documentation and content.
- Environmental Health and Safety:
- Assist with other EH&S safety initiatives and programs as assigned such as public outreach projects (fairs and events), representing EH&S for the general community, and coordinating with the Hazardous Waste Specialist to ensure pickup of hazardous wastes from laboratories.
- Emergency Planning and Response:
- Respond to emergencies, including off-hours and weekends as needed.
- Conduct follow-up investigations and assist with other EH&S duties as assigned.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
