Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or a related field. Four (4) years of full time directly related experience in communications, marketing or public relations. *Writing samples will be required from interview candidates. The interview process will also include completion of a timed writing assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Five (5) years of full-time experience in communications, marketing or public relations. Experience with web platforms. Experience in higher education/non-profit organizations. Full time directly related experience in communications, marketing or public relations in a healthcare or academic setting.Brief Description of Duties:
At Stony Brook Medicine the Office of Marketing and Communications is seeking a dynamic and highly organized Communications Manager to join our team. This position fills an important role within the health sciences schools, serving as the Communications Manager of the School of Social Welfare, School of Health Professions and the School of Nursing. Reporting to the Senior Director of Executive and Internal Communications, this position is responsible for the development and execution of strategic plans for each area and will interact closely with all levels of the organization. Advise the Schools' departments on policies and communications best practices for disseminating information to a range of stakeholder groups.

The successful incumbent must possess:

  • Strong writing, editing and project management skills with the ability to juggle a range of priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Creative thinker with an eye for design and a demonstrated ability to create engaging editorial and marketing content.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Duties:

  • Oversee external and internal communications for School of Social Welfare, School of Health Professions and the School of Nursing (Schools) to provide an ambitious, visionary and creative approach to communication and strategies that support the mission and activities of the Schools. Develop communications strategies and materials to support the Schools' strategic plan externally and internally.
  • Plan and implement internal and external communication programs in support of the strategic direction of the Schools.
  • Identify key differentiators for each school based on quality, service and/or outcomes, and leverage the Stony Brook Medicine and Stony Brook University brand to build the brand for the Schools through consistent messaging, differentiated value propositions and brand positioning in the market. Seek information and operate at a level of constant inquiry about business priorities and key initiatives that can further differentiate the Schools within the market.
  • Seek out news-worthy stories that support objectives and translate stories of success into news and marketing opportunities. Work closely with faculty and staff to promote news coverage of major research and educational accomplishment stories and announcements; in collaboration with the media team, organize and coordinate media opportunities.
  • Support the development of marketing content/materials to accomplish goals. Determine effective methods of communication (online and traditional mediums) and create on target messaging. Ensure accuracy and timeliness of messaging.
  • Manage a comprehensive review and refresh of Schools website content, with a focus on keeping content current and prioritizing content placement based on priorities. In collaboration with the marketing communications web team, leverage analytics to drive engagement, inform content design and create positive user experiences. Act as editorial manager for each School's websites, brochures, newsletters and all other communications materials.
  • Oversee the design, research writing, editing, publishing and distribution of print and web-based publications and ensure message continuity, design, and tone for digital and print platforms/publications.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, special event planners, student groups and others to provide support in creating, editing and formatting content.
  • Monitor the overall perception of the Schools and foster a positive public perception of the Schools through effective public relations that influence opinion and promote ideas.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
