Biology Academic Advisor
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time related experience or equivalent via part-time, student, internship or graduate assistant experience with student-centered support activities such as academic advising, admissions, orientation programs, career counseling or other student development programs in a college or university setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or in any area of biology or a related scientific discipline. Experience working with or teaching undergraduates in life science disciplines. Experience advising undergraduate students. Proficiency with software tools for desktop publishing and management of student advising.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Biology Academic Advisor will provide academic advising to students with interests in the Biology major (BS and BA), Biology minor and Biochemistry major across all four years. The Biology Academic Advisor will assist in updating and revising the Biology section of the Undergraduate Bulletin and will generate Forms and Checklists that accurately reflect the requirements described in the Bulletin. The incumbent will work closely with Academic and Transfer Advising Services to assist in the coordination of Transfer Orientations for incoming Biology and Biochemistry students and will be responsible for pre-evaluating the academic records of all incoming Biology and Biochemistry students and making scheduling recommendations for their first semester to be used at their Orientation. The incumbent will serve as a liaison to academic departments that offer minor degree programs that can be used to satisfy the requirements of the BIO BA. The Biology Academic Advisor will be a key member of a professional team that will coordinate the efforts of faculty, staff and student constituents in enhancing student success. The successful incumbent will be responsible for assisting the faculty director with the following specific activities:
Assist in providing advising support to Biology and Biochemistry undergraduate majors/minors, a population of more than 3,000 students. This involves predominantly one-on-one meetings and individual communications to assist students with academic planning, course retake approvals and petitions.
Assist in ensuring that the Biology section of the Undergraduate Bulletin is revised as needed to present a clear and accurate description of degree program requirements and develop advising materials such as requirement checklists and suggested semester schedules that conform to the Bulletin description. Assist in working with the office of Academic and Transfer Advising Services (ATAS) on Transfer Orientations. Responsibilities will include assistance with pre-evaluating the academic records of all students transferring in as Biology or Biochemistry majors, approximately 400 students annually and preparing course planning recommendations for the first semester to be used by their Transfer Advisor at Orientation. The incumbent will attend all Transfer Orientations that include Biology or Biochemistry majors. Update the Biology website.
Represent Undergraduate Biology and assist with planning of various programming and events. This includes, but is not limited to, representing the Biology Program at campus advising events such as Admitted Student Day and the Major Event and both coordinating and giving presentations to student groups such as WISE and EOP/AIM, and to freshmen cohorts from the different Undergraduate Colleges.
Assisting with processing of Honors Thesis applications. Assisting with the Department Convocation program.
Work with the Director of Undergraduate Biology and the life sciences faculty and with other members of the student services staff in BIO and in other campus offices such as ATAS, Pre-Professional Advising, the Registrar, International Academic Programs, the Academic Success and Tutoring Center, the Undergraduate Colleges, EOP-AIM, URECA, WISE, and the Center for Inclusive Education to identify barriers to student success and develop effective interventions that address these issues. The incumbent will have responsibilities in using advising tools such as Degree Works and Navigate to improve the effectiveness of advising by the Biology program. Responsibilities will also include representing the Biology Program at campus-wide meetings of the Committee on Academic Advising.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
