Description

Stony Brook University's SoMAS and IACS invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in artificial intelligence (AI) and/or machine learning (ML) applied to climate and its impacts. The position starts in Fall 2025. We seek candidates addressing climate-related topics through AI/ML from diverse disciplines, such as climate and extreme weather, biogeochemistry, earth systems science, ecology & evolution, and social science. Applicants should have a strong track record of publications in ML applications. The position offers collaboration opportunities within SoMAS, IACS, and the campus's new AI Institute. Candidates should demonstrate strong potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and the ability to establish an externally funded research program. The successful candidate will also engage with faculty in social, natural, and computational sciences, fostering research on the interconnectedness of political, ecological, and social systems. Teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students are expected, along with contributions to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity. This tenure-track position has an initial three-year renewable appointment.

Stony Brook University, located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore, is a research university with 24,000 students and 13,500 faculty and staff. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, marine sciences, sustainability, computational science, ecology, or a closely related field, with an emphasis on climate applications, in hand no later than August 31, 2025. Candidates should have a proven track record of research, demonstrated by a strong publication record in artificial intelligence or machine learning applied to climate or closely related topics, along with a compelling vision for future research. A strong commitment to teaching is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in AI, machine learning, or related fields, as well as those interested in working within multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary environments, are highly desirable. Applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable laboratory environment and advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives at the institutional level will receive special consideration.
