Machine Operator

Job Description

Operates various metal cutting, drilling, and press machines, along with various small hand tools and metal cutting equipment, to assist in production operations. This includes assembling components from prepared materials up to the packaging of finished products.

Responsibilities

  • Use tape measure and calipers to ensure quality specifications are met.

  • Inspect unassembled materials to ensure proper finish, length, and shape as defined on drawings and order documentation.

  • Assemble finished products by positioning parts per requirements of the unit being assembled or by following shop drawings and quality control requirements.

  • Remove small quantities of metal with hand tools to produce a close fit between parts.

  • Perform minor tool changes and minor machine set-ups to cut, saw, drill, and mill components.

  • Use hand tools (manual and powered) to drill and tap components for assembly.

  • Operate material handling equipment.

  • Perform machine preventative maintenance.

  • Complete daily report sheets.

  • Maintain a proper level of housekeeping within the department.

  • Work with limited supervision.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with grinders, production, quality assurance, finishing, grinding, buffing, polishing, machine operating, metal finishing, aluminum finishing, buffers, band and disc grinding, blueprint reading, sanding, and hand tools.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write basic routine reports and correspondence.

  • Proficient mathematical skills including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Strong reasoning skills with the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of measuring devices.

  • Ability to operate hand and bench type tools.
