Actalent Controls Engineer in Sterling Heights, Michigan

Job Title: Controls EngineerJob Description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Controls Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for developing and implementing improvements to control systems and equipment, troubleshooting machinery and automation issues, and integrating controls into IT systems. This role requires a proactive approach to problem solving and strong technical skills in controls engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement improvements to control systems and equipment using Factory Information Systems (FIS) data.

  • Lead problem solving in resolving equipment performance issues.

  • Troubleshoot machinery, robot, automation, and controls issues and downtime.

  • Assist in the training of manufacturing personnel and plant electricians.

  • Integrate controls into IT systems like Factory Information Systems (FIS), Error Proofing, QWX, and QTS.

  • Use FIS plant monitoring software to review cycle times of equipment.

  • Review and coordinate project installations.

  • Reprogram equipment for engineering changes and improvements.

  • Maintain program backups for machinery and automation.

  • Program new installations of automation, machinery, material handling, and robots.

  • Review risk assessments as part of a team evaluating equipment safety.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of Controls Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • 3+ years experience with PLC logic, controls, Siemens and Modicon programming.

  • Experience working in a launch capacity.

  • Machining and assembly experience.

  • Automation experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering Degree or applicable experience.

  • Ability to work with UAW maintenance, vendors, and other process team members.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal, email, etc.).

  • Familiarity with Ford Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Knowledge of UL508A requirements and NFPA79.

  • Experience with Siemens Step 7 programming and troubleshooting.

  • Siemens power line and solution line configuration and programming.

  • Fanuc controls troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, and coolant design & functionality.

  • Laser operation and safety.

  • Programmable safety design and operation.

  • CNC design and operation.

  • Risk assessment process.

  • Familiarity with RFID tag map and controls.

  • Experience with RS Logix, Control Logix, and Micro Logix.

  • Knowledge of controls systems lifecycle (obsolescence).

  • Experience with ECPL and Access task process and design.

Work Environment

You will be working in a launch capacity at the Sterling Axle Plant, primarily on the day shift from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. While most work will be during these hours, occasional afternoon support may be required with plenty of notice.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.87 - $42.88/hr.
