The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness. BIOLOGIST PROGRAM MANAGER/ EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

This position will help create, and manage a program designed to engage the non-hunter and angler population by promoting non-consumptive opportunities (hiking, kayaking, birding, etc.) on LDWF owned and managed properties as well as increasing public exposure and engagement in LDWF’s education, species, and habitat management programs across the state of Louisiana. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and implement a strategic plan that will engage and interact with the community by:

• Promoting available non-consumptive activity information for various department managed properties

• Community education on safe practices for interacting with nature/wildlife

• Community education on safety information regarding kayaking and other aquatic activities

• Outreach programs and events for specific non-consumptive activities

• Promoting and engaging public involvement that highlight existing department programs

• Developing relationships with non-profit conservation groups to promote and enhance program objectives.

The successful applicant must have a passion for engaging and teaching others how to interact with Louisiana’s natural resources and an ability to bring new ideas to the table in regards to educational programs. Since this program is state wide, frequent in-state overnight travel will be required.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation followed by seven years of professional experience in wildlife or fisheries research, management, education or conservation; forestry; or in environmental science.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Graduate training in qualifying fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

A non-thesis master's degree in qualifying fields will substitute for one year of the required experience.

A master's degree with completed thesis in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.

A Ph.D. in qualifying fields will substitute for two years of the required experience.

NOTE:

Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science, and agribusiness.

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Directs and manages a major research, biological, or environmental management program encompassing multiple species and geographic areas.

Plans and develops highly complex techniques for the management of wildlife and fisheries habitats and populations and environmental protection.

Reviews current literature, confers with other environmental professionals, designs research projects to provide life history data, considers adequate sample size for statistical analysis, develops procedures with other managers, and monitors progress of projects.

Reviews data from completed studies, prepares manuscripts for publication with subordinates, and formulates recommendations for continued research, initiating new projects or management recommendations.

Confers frequently with international, federal, state, and local officials and natural resource professionals to review user-group, landowner, or habitat problems and develop a consensus on procedures for solution.

Reviews and approves research and development projects proposed by subordinates to insure soundness of scientific principle and compliance with appropriate guidelines.

Conducts sensitive, complex negotiations on biological and departmental issues with private industry, landowners, and governmental agencies.

Coordinates contracts for technical services between the department, universities, and private concerns.
