This position is open only to Colorado state residents.

Fort Collins, Loma, Trinidad & Cortez Vacancies Only: The primary duties of this position are located within 30 miles of the State border; therefore, this position is exempt from the residency requirements. Applications will be considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado.

$3,000 hiring bonus- $1,500 during first pay period and $1,500 after one year of employment with Port of Entry.

This recruitment will be used to establish an eligible list for Colorado statewide. Current vacancy locations (subject to change): Ft Collins, Ft Morgan, Limon, Lamar, Trinidad, Loma, Dumont, Cortez & Monument. The greatest demand for job placement are at locations for Dumont & Ft. Morgan.

All new hires will attend Port of Entry eleven (11) week Academy that is scheduled for January 13, 2025 . If you have applied for this position in the last year, you must reapply.

About the Work Unit

Port of Entry exists to encourage and promote the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles in a manner that protects life and the state’s infrastructure through uniform practices and enforcement procedures. Establishes and maintains effective commercial vehicle operating standards, enforcement practices and penalties that provide the basis for uniformity and compatibility among the enforcement community and industry partners. To facilitate the enforcement of laws and rules, both federal and state, concerning commercial vehicle operation. To fairly and equitably accomplish the collection of license fees, taxes and penalties while emphasizing effective customer service.

About the Job

P ort of Entry Interns are responsible for clearing commercial vehicles at the port of entry by weighing vehicles through the use of fixed or portable scales via computer terminals.

Performs visual inspections of commercial vehicles and loads to ensure compliance with state and adopted federal statutes, rules and regulations. The inspection process includes: reviewing permits, registrations, licenses, shipping papers and vehicle loads for validity; and using fixed or mobile scales to weigh vehicles in order to compute gross weight and determine the distribution of wheel and axle loads.

Reviews and inspects required documents, including vehicle registrations, fuel permits, interstate and intrastate authorities, hazardous material permits, extra legal permits, shipping papers and commercial driver licenses.

Verifies and enters information into the business system while observing each driver's condition.

Processes associated receipts and collect appropriate taxes, delinquent taxes, and permit fees. Interns also educate drivers, industry representatives, and the general public on the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the commercial vehicle industry.

Physically measures and inspects commercial vehicles and loads and drivers' status and condition to ensure compliance with state and adopted federal statutes, rules and regulations. Measure the height, length and width of vehicles and/or loads; check for non-taxed fuel; and complete inspection reports as applicable.

Testifies in court in support of penalty assessments, summons, and other judicial proceedings as an official representative of the state. In addition, attends local meetings as an official representative of the Port of Entry.

Conducts routine maintenance and other duties as assigned. Interns will clean and maintain the Port building and associated grounds as required.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as scales, trailers and port vehicles as required. Maintains an inventory of necessary common items such as office, cleaning and maintenance supplies. Operates mobile unit vehicles in the performance of their duties.

Interns work at a facility which may operate 24 hours a day, as determined to be necessary by the Chief of the Colorado State Patrol.

While clearing and inspecting trucks, exposure to hazardous materials is possible.

  • Ability to attend and successfully complete an intensive CSP Port of Entry Academy training. The Port of Entry academy is a paid nine-week training academy that is located in Golden, CO. After successful completion and graduation from the training academy, Interns report to their assigned work locations.

  • Applicants must be available to work 24/7 as needed. This includes weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and must be able to work in all weather conditions.

  • This position includes physical demands that include: Climbing, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching, Crawling, Reaching, Handling, Hearing and Vision. Exert up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and/or up to 10-20 lbs. of force frequently.

  • Applicants must be willing to be able to successfully pass a background investigation, a polygraph exam, drug screen and fingerprint based criminal history search.

  • The background investigation is based on the following criteria, including but not limited to: driving history, criminal behavior/history, alcohol use/behavior, drug use/behavior, and integrity.

  • If you omit any material fact on your application, testing materials, or during the background interview or polygraph, you may be disqualified.

  • If any disqualifying information is discovered at any stage of the selection process, you may be removed from consideration.

  • Use or possession of illegal drugs beyond 5 years, the appointing authority should consider the frequency of the behavior, the quantity of the drugs involved, and the type of drug.

  • The circumstances and frequency surrounding the illegal use of a prescription controlled schedule I, II, or III drugs (as defined in C.R.S. 18-18-102) within the last 5 years.

Alcohol Behavior

To be disqualified upon admission or confirmation of:

  • Unauthorized consumption of an alcoholic beverage while on "patrol" as a law enforcement officer.

  • Refusal to agree to submit to a previous employer alcohol testing as an employee within the past 5 years

  • To be considered under the totality of circumstances for disqualification by the appointing authority based on the circumstances and information.

  • Unauthorized consumption of an alcoholic beverage while on "duty" as a law enforcement officer.

  • Consideration is given to the circumstances and frequency of consumption during attendance at conferences or events.
