POSITION DETAILS:

The Department of Educational Studies in the School of Education at the College of Staten Island (CSI) seeks a full time, tenure track faculty in Community Based Leadership. Responsibilities include: engaging in research and publication; teaching courses and advising doctoral students in the Community Based Leadership Ed.D. Program; developing courses in areas of specialization; performing department and college services; engaging in other professional activities; and developing community and/or k-16 school partnerships.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND

The College of Staten Island is a comprehensive senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), organized around two academic divisions and three professional schools, with over 11, 000 students. CSI offers a broad range of academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and in several professional areas. The College awards associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and professional doctorate degrees, and in collaboration with The CUNY Graduate Center, numerous PhD degrees. CSI’s internationally recognized faculty is passionately engaged in scholarly and artistic activities, and together with a strong professional staff, lead students through transformational learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. The College of Staten Island is situated on a 204 acre site and includes a residential component. It is a hub of intellectual and artistic activity, a community partner and source of economic impact and job creation for the greater Staten Island area.

The CSI School of Education is organized into two departments: Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Studies, and offers undergraduate, graduate, post graduate, and certificate programs with a strong interdisciplinary focus that blend preparation in the content areas, foundations, field experiences, curriculum and pedagogy.

The doctoral program in Community Based Leadership (CBL)is housed in the Department of Educational Studies but includes faculty from other academic departments at CSI, other faculty across CUNY, and non-academics holding doctorates and engaged in community work. The School of Education launched the program in the summer of 2020 in an effort to cultivate leaders capable of fostering collaboration among community institutions in service of the success and well-being of young people. Participants in the first five cohorts represent multiple fields—including but not limited to K-12 education, higher education, healthcare, and government—that contribute to the health and well-being of children and the communities they inhabit. Many students and program faculty are oriented towards critical perspectives and practices that prioritize the centering the voices of marginalized people and conducting research and interventions with communities rather than on communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. or Ed.D or ABD (anticipating completion of the degree prior to the start date of the position) degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred qualifications include:

Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to research and publication in an area of expertise that supports scholarship in communities and/or leadership within them. The fields include but are not limited to urban education, social work, sociology, history, and law. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to collaborate on program administration community building with an array of faculty members and doctoral students who are pursuing a variety of professional goals. Preference will be given to candidates whose area of expertise also applies to one or more of the other program areas in the School of Education and who possess work or related experience in urban communities, in areas such as but not limited to pre-K-16 urban education, hospitals, social agencies, and community based organizations.

COMPENSATION

$64,649 - $90,375
