Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect (Remote Opportunity)

The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day

Position Summary: Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences Information Technology team (H&S IT) is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect . This pivotal role performs a range of responsibilities across application development, integration, and systems architecture using traditional software languages and frameworks as well as our Mendix low-code/no-code application development platform. The role is also responsible for security vulnerability remediation across a wide variety of applications for H&S administrative and academic units. The Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect collaborates with and provides technical guidance for IT partners, staff, and faculty in H&S, partners with H&S IT team members and stakeholders on project work, and works closely with the H&S IT management teamto align activities and initiatives with H&S IT strategy and H&S business priorities.

H&S IT is part of the H&S Dean’s Office (HSDO). We support the mission and operations of the School of Humanities and Sciences by developing and supporting IT processes, applications, and systems. H&S IT consists of three-sub teams: H&S IT Application Services which supports applications and data systems; H&S IT Web Services which supports web content management systems and digital accessibility efforts; and H&S IT Operations which supports other technology services and processes that keep our school’s everyday IT running smoothly. The Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect works on the H&S IT Application Services team and reports to the Associate Director ofApplication Services.

Stanford has a highly decentralized IT organizational structure. In some cases H&S IT wholly owns and supports IT systems specific to the School of Humanities and Sciences. In other cases H&S IT provides local support to H&S for the IT systems/projects that are owned by other campus IT organizations. And in other cases yet, H&S IT is far removed from the technology support processes but we advocate for H&S users and we reduce friction by getting them to the right place to get their needs met quickly. The Stanford technology stacks are equally complex, with an expanse of applications, systems, databases, integrations, and processes. It’s up to H&S IT to determine how/where we can leverage those systems individually and collectively to meet H&S needs. The Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect will contribute to these efforts.

The primary focus of the Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect role is to design, develop, and support solutions on the Mendix platform, an application development environment that uses a model-driven approach. Mendix's visual development environment presents UI, logic, and data models in a way that is intuitive for traditional developers and allows the broader H&S IT Application Services team to support and administer solutions through UI-based configuration. The platform's openness and extensibility also enable developers to add functionality using existing programming skills. The School of H&S is adopting Mendix as the primary platform for supporting administrative applications across the Dean’s office and academic units. This role, in partnership with others on the Application Services team, will serve as a primary subject matter expert for Mendix, responsible for the architecture, development, and integration of both simple and complex solutions.

In developing an ecosystem of Mendix applications and supporting other Application Services initiatives, the Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect will be responsible for developing various Application Programming Interface (API) technologies, including Web APIs, other integrations, and software libraries/frameworks.

A key additional responsibility will be to maintain and secure H&S applications and systems by proactively identifying, addressing, and mitigating security vulnerabilities to protect against cyber threats. This includes remediating security vulnerabilities identified in regular University IT Qualys scans.

Beyond hands-on development and support, this role will be a critical partner in helping H&S IT leadership develop and implement long-term application strategies. This includes roadmap planning for new implementations, migrations of existing systems to the Mendix platform, integration with University systems, and identifying appropriate integration/API gateways.

The Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively partner with H&S stakeholders at all levels for various software and application initiatives. They should demonstrate a positive attitude towards continuous process improvement while maintaining a team-oriented and stakeholder-focused mindset. Critical to this role are sound judgment, effective decision-making, and respectful relationship management.

This position requires a strong desire to explore emerging technologies that support and enhance H&S administrative functions, with the ability to translate this research into operational successes. The H&S IT team regularly engages in initiatives to benefit those we serve, so the Senior Full Stack Developer/Architect must bring energy and passion for developing quality solutions that align with and support business needs. Additionally, they should foster a culture of trust, encourage diverse thinking, and value the contributions of the people they support.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing, exempt position. H&S IT is a remote work team that maintains core business hours during Pacific Time. All team members are required to convene together tri-annually on Stanford’s historic campus for 3-5 days to perform in-person planning and collaboration activities.
