The Cell Sciences Imaging Facility (CSIF) seeks a manager of advanced neuroscience imaging for its Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Microscopy Service.
The CSIF is a university-wide imaging center that provides high resolution, state-of-the-art imaging technologies and visualization-analysis software for multidimensional analysis of cells and tissue. The facility operates 3 interdependent microscopy facilities on Stanford University’s campus: the Beckman Center CSIF, The Shriram Center CSIF, and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Microscopy Service.
The Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Microscopy Service (NMS) manager will be responsible for supporting the strategic planning and execution of the NMS’s long-range objectives as well as providing day-to-day operations. This is a fast paced, multi-faceted position for an accomplished microscopist-neuroscientist who seeks to operate and develop an advanced neuro-focused microscopy user facility. Primary users will be researchers from the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. The manager will oversee operation and administration of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Microscopy Services service center covering the following components*:
User training and support - training facility users in the correct and safe use of facility instrumentation and application of imaging methods as required by experiment.
Advanced imaging - training and supporting users in advanced imaging techniques and technologies, including light sheet microscopy of cleared tissues, spatial transcriptomics (StarMap), deep tissue multi-photon microscopy, deconvolution, electrophysiology coupled imaging, and live cell and animal intravital imaging.
Research Design and Participation - consultation with users in the design of experiments involving advanced, quantitative light microscopy methods as listed above. Research, develop, and implement advanced microscopy techniques that are useful to the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute’s research community.
Image processing and quantitative data analysis support.
Facility Maintenance - maintain the functionality and calibration of facility microscopes and ancillary equipment. Arrange for and oversee routine maintenance and repair of facility instrumentation.
Data Collection and Presentation - collecting and managing data collected on facility instrumentation, helping to prepare data for publication and presentation.
Training and educational components - develop short talks, web pages, etc. as well as organize seminars and workshops.
Teaching - Biological Light Microscopy course (8 weeks) co-teach with CSIF director and faculty.
Facility management - basic business accounting and reporting, monthly billing routines. Create strategic plans for future facilities needs in consultation with CSIF director and Wu Tsai leadership. Work with IT group to manage workstations and server.
Co-author with CSIF director and Stanford faculty shared instrumentation grant proposals to fund replacements and upgrades of NMS instrumentation.
Candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule based on research needs & deadlines.
Must be able to work independently, must be customer oriented and be able to interact with multiple researchers (RAs, undergrads, postdocs, PIs , MDs) daily.
Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal and customer service skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A MS or PhD degree in neuroscience, biology or biomedical research is preferred with at least 2 years relevant experience supporting advanced imaging technologies preferably in a user facility. Position requires expert knowledge in both the theory and practice of advanced biological light microscopy imaging including but not limited to confocal, light sheet, deconvolution, multiphoton, and live cell and intravital imaging. This requires an advanced understanding of light microscope function and design and a wide-ranging knowledge of molecular, cellular, and whole organism anatomy and function, especially those related to the common model organisms used by the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute research community.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Understanding of academic research facility needs.
General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab(s).
Demonstrated supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple large budgets.
Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
Excellent communication and customer services skills.
Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $102,931 to $129,037 per annum.
