The purpose of this position is to support the conservation and recovery of wildlife Species in Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) by working on a team to secure funding and collaboratively implement, monitor, and revise the MN Wildlife Action Plan. The primary focus of this position will be securing, managing, tracking and reporting on state and federal funding for implementation of the MN Wildlife Action Plan and Endangered Species recovery. Leadership and administration for the plan resides in the Nongame Wildlife Unit within the Division of Ecological and Water Resources. The successful candidate will bring grant/fiscal management and implementation tracking skills and abilities to the existing Wildlife Action Plan team. Team members participate in prioritization/work planning, evaluation of outcomes, assist with survey and habitat management activities, and coordination with other agencies and organizations (including the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies).

Responsibilities include:

  • Federal Grant Administration: Administer federal grants (such as State Wildlife and Endangered Species) available through the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) aimed at supporting the conservation of rare species.

  • Non-Federal Grant Administration: Administer non-federal grants (LCCMR, Outdoor Heritage, other) targeted to conservation of rare species and their habitat.

  • Wildlife Action Plan Implementation Team Member: Collaborate with other team members to effectively implement strategies and actions outlined in the Wildlife Action Plan. Within the team, take the lead for tracking planned, funded, and accomplished work.

This position may be eligible to telework on a full or part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, conservation biology, botany, zoology, or a closely related field.

  • Three years of professional experience in natural resources management or researching the population and habitats of wildlife. Experience must include rare species, designing and implementing biological assessments, and evaluating measurable outcomes.

  • Knowledge of plant and animal taxonomy and the ecological life cycles and relationships of living organisms sufficient to review and comment on wildlife grant proposals and reports.

  • Knowledge of federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures as they relate to federal grant programs.

  • Financial management skills sufficient to develop and interpret financial reports and track multiple financial accounts simultaneously.

  • Experience preparing budgets, work plans, and other planning and fiscal documents.

  • Technical writing skills sufficient to summarize progress, create reports, and edit reports prepared by other staff.

  • Written and oral communication skills sufficient to speak or write to individuals, groups, agencies, and organizations.

  • Proficient in the use of word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Skill in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) sufficient to apply GIS technology within project tracking databases.

  • Ability to prioritize work, make work assignments, manage work schedules and monitor progress to ensure proper completion of tasks.

  • Advanced human relations skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others from a variety of disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, Botany, Zoology, or a closely related field.

  • Knowledge of Federal Assistance programs (State Wildlife Grants, Endangered Species, Office of Conservation Investment) and enacted Federal Assistance rules, regulations and guidelines.

  • Experience in data management and data governance.

  • Experience writing grant proposals.

  • Experience in writing technical reports for state and federal agencies.
