University of St. Thomas Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II or III in St. Paul, Minnesota

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II or III position within the Facilities Management Department.

The University of St. Thomas will be closed starting December 23 with staff returning on Thursday, January 2. Application review will begin after the holiday break.

    Hiring Pay Rate Based On Position and Union Contract

    Maintenance Engineer II $29.52/hr

    Maintenance Engineer III $38.89/hr

Potential Shift Hours (Based on Seniority)

Monday – Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm

Tuesday – Saturday 7:00am – 3:30pm

Monday – Friday 10:00am – 6:30pm

Monday – Friday 2:30pm – 11:00pm

JOB SUMMARY

Mechanical Maintenance Engineers will perform preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical equipment and systems throughout the Universities properties.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III

  • Operation, maintenance, repairs, and water treatment testing of all steam boilers, hydronic boilers, centrifugal chiller, cooling towers and closed loop systems.

  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of air handler units, exhaust fans, air conditioning units, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, refrigeration units, both commercial and residential.

  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of pumping systems associated with heating, cooling and plumbing systems.

  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of swimming pools, whirlpool spas, their water treatment and associated pumping systems.

  • Plumbing repairs and maintenance of drains, sinks, faucets, showers, toilets, flush valves, floor drains, water heaters, water softeners and any auxiliary plumbing systems.

  • Commercial and residential appliance repairs of refrigerators, stoves, ovens, ranges, dishwashers, clothes washers, and clothes dryers.

  • Maintenance and repair of residential style forced air furnaces, hydronic boilers, air conditioners and their auxiliary systems.

  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of pneumatic air compressors, vacuum system, air dryers and their axillary systems.

  • Operation, maintenance and repair of pneumatic control systems as related to the temperature control of mechanical equipment and systems.

  • Operation of the computerized Energy Management System (EMS) where it applies to the temperature control of mechanical equipment and systems.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II

  • Operation, maintenance, repairs, and water treatment testing of steam boilers, hydronic boilers, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers and closed loop systems limited to individuals licensing and experience.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of air handler units, exhaust fans, air conditioning units, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, refrigeration units, both commercial and residential.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of pumping systems associated with heating, cooling and plumbing systems.

  • Perform preventive maintenance of swimming pools, whirlpool spas, their water treatment and associated pumping systems.

  • Plumbing repairs and maintenance of drains, sinks, faucets, showers, toilets, flush valves, floor drains.

  • Preventive maintenance and minor repair of residential style forced air furnaces, hydronic boilers, air conditioners and their auxiliary systems.

  • Operation of the computerized Energy Management System (EMS)

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

All Classifications

  • Valid Minnesota driver's license.

  • Proficient in basic computer skills including MS Office, email, word documents and basic spreadsheet navigation.

  • Be a member of a bargaining unit (Local 70).

    Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III

  • Graduate from a two (2) years technical school in the field of mechanical maintenance.

  • Have five (5) years’ experience in the field of mechanical maintenance.

  • Minimum of a Minnesota 1st Class C boiler license.

  • EPA Universal Refrigeration Certificate.

  • Certified Pool Operators Certificate. Preferred or the ability to obtain it in six (6) months.

    Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Two (2) years’ experience in the field of mechanical maintenance.

  • Minimum of a Minnesota 2nd Class C boiler license or the ability to obtain in six (6) months.

  • EPA Universal Refrigeration Certificate or the ability to obtain it in twelve (12) months

  • Certified Pool Operators Certificate or the ability to obtain it in three (3) months.

Working Conditions

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III’s will be assigned buildings and be the primary person responsible for performing repairs of mechanical equipment and systems in those buildings. They will be a back-up for engineers that are on leave or absent in buildings that are assigned to those engineers. Maintenance Engineer III’s can be called upon to respond to buildings other than the ones they are primary responsible for and required to make necessary repairs as needed.

On a rotating interval Maintenance Engineer III’s are required to be “on-call”, the engineers are responsible to respond to all calls and pages and resolve issues as needed. Maintenance Engineers are required to be available to work weekends and holidays as needed.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Maintenance Engineer II will work with mechanical maintenance engineers in their assigned buildings performing preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical equipment and systems in those building. As skill levels and on-the- job experiences increase, the Maintenance Engineer II will be assigned buildings to perform preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical equipment and systems in those buildings.

Maintenance Engineer II will be a part of the “on-call” rotation, the engineer will be responsible to respond to all calls and pages and resolve issues as needed.

There is no automatic progression from this position to any other position.
