Data Protection and Privacy - Assistant Director

We work closely with all parts of the organization to identify, manage and monitor risk, providing coordinated advice and assistance on independence, conflicts, compliance, regulatory, policy, security issues, as well as dealing with claims and any queries regarding ethics.

Your key responsibilities

As part of the EY Americas Data Protection (Confidentiality, Data Privacy) function, you will help to interpret data protection and privacy laws and policies, determine required actions to standard and non-standard situations, and make recommendations based on firm guidance, professional standards, subject matter expertise, and acquired experience. You will promote compliance with data protection and privacy laws and policies by analyzing legal and regulatory requirements, conducting compliance gap analyses to assess risks, and developing appropriate strategies, policies, and processes to achieve and maintain compliance, including employee training and awareness efforts. You will also conduct data protection due diligence activities around processes and systems/technology (i.e., Data Protection/Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs)), and coordinate responses to client inquiries about EY’s Data Protection program.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Thorough understanding of legal and regulatory requirements applicable to Data Protection and Privacy.

  • Participates in the Compliance function of the Data Protection program, including but not limited to:

  • Conducting Data Protection due diligence activities for processes, systems/technology, suppliers, and M&A targets, including conducting Data Protection/Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), collaborating with EY’s IT Risk Management, Information Security, Service Lines, functional teams as well as other stakeholders,

  • Tracking and analyzing new and/or revised applicable data protection laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., CPRA, VCDPA, HIPAA),

  • Developing and maintaining EY U.S. data protection policies, guidance, training, and awareness communication plan to reflect new and/or changes to data protection laws, regulations, and other related EY policies,

  • Assessing data protection compliance risks and participating in the development of appropriate plans to manage identified risks,

  • Guiding EY personnel through legal, regulatory, EY client, and EY firm data protection and privacy requirements,

  • Participating in consultations with EY personnel (e.g., client serving personnel, system owners) regarding operational impact of data protection-related laws, regulations, client contractual requirements, and broad data industry practices and recommending appropriate changes to EY processes, systems, and engagement activities by leveraging knowledge of existing processes and business experience

  • Providing Privacy by Design (PbD) guidance to system owners as they design, develop, and/ or upgrade systems

  • Responding to client inquiries and questions about EY’s Data Protection program; maintaining library of client assurance responses for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness, and

  • Monitoring and assessing program controls.

  • Interacts with various stakeholders and functions across the organization, such as EY’s Information Security, ECRM, General Counsel’s Office (GCO), Service Line Quality, Talent, and client serving teams, including but not limited to:

  • Partnering with local and Global teams across the above Data Protection processes,

  • Working collaboratively with related various EY Service Line Quality teams so as to understand and recommend enhancements to various service line policy or awareness efforts,

  • Assisting in reporting on various data protection program activities and new developments to key stakeholders within the organization, including senior leaders within EY Service Line Quality, GCO, ECRM, and others, and

  • Developing relationships across teams/functions

  • Collaborates with Americas Data Protection Leader and Americas Risk Management Leader in:

  • Preparing for EY Americas Steering Committee meetings,

  • Developing and maintaining program strategy; validating strategic direction of data protection policies and procedures, and

  • Advising Americas Regional Data Protection Leaders (outside of the US) on strategies to address data protection issues; co-developing data protection compliance plans and monitoring the deployment of these plans.

  • Strategically manages risks and supports other functions of the Data Protection program to protect confidential and personal information, including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining EY confidential and personal information inventory, in partnership with EY internal functions and service lines, to understand types of information that require protection and to fulfil data protection regulatory requirements (e.g., Records of Processing Activities (ROPA)),

  • Documenting, conducting, and assisting others with investigations of data incidents (i.e., instances of loss, theft, or inappropriate disclosure of confidential/personal information); collaborating with clients, internal functions, and EY service lines to understand root cause, assess impact, and develop remediation plans, and

  • Responding to data subject rights (DSR) and internal data access requests in accordance with applicable data protection legal and regulatory requirements and EY policies.

  • Identifies emerging compliance risks and proposes solutions to address these

  • Manages resource requirements to accomplish the goals of the program

  • Participates in other ad hoc projects, as assigned

To qualify for the role you must have

  • Strong research, writing, and communications skills

  • Solid understanding of relevant firm business and area wide data protection issues and concerns

  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills

  • Flexibility and the ability to take the initiative

  • Ability to right-size risk

  • Strong research and communications skills

  • Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks

  • Good working knowledge of information systems and common software packages

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Juris Doctorate preferred

  • 4-7 plus years related experience

Ideally, you’ll have

  • The ability to reference existing firm data protection and privacy policies as well as knowledge and experience to review complex situations and assist in proposing solutions

  • Strong knowledge of relevant global, national, and local data protection laws, regulations, and standards, as well as familiarity with other risk management initiatives outside of their specific area

  • Sound understanding of high-level technology trends and issues surrounding data protection

  • Privacy certification from ISACA or the International Association of Privacy Professionals (e.g., CIPP, CIPM, CDPSE)

What we offer

We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $111,100 to $226,700. The salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $138,900 to $236,100. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 40-60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
