Mechanic Trainee

Duties:
- Operates motor vehicles and various attachments, such as mounted plows, body mounted spreader, tanks, distributors, and trailers of various sizes and shapes.
- Performs preventative maintenance and oil changes. Inspects undercarriage, S-cams, brake changers, brakes, and wheel seals on heavy and medium duty equipment.
- Greases various types of equipment and trucks.
- Tests battery and checks lighting systems. Inspects engine and transmission for leakage.
- Conducts vehicle multi-point inspections.
- Performs tire rotations and provides general vehicle care.
- Inspects vehicles for safety and ensures all service equipment is in good working order, clean and properly repaired when needed.
- Performs basic welding and repairs on equipment as assigned.
- Ensures that the work area is appropriately maintained.

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No experience is required, but prior mechanical repair experience preferred.
Special Requirements:
- Trainee will be required to become a certified mechanic within two years from date of hire.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license with no restrictions for nighttime driving.
- Must have and maintain a Class-A Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an N or X tank endorsement and appropriate medical card.
- Employee will be subject to call-in during off duty hours as dictated by weather conditions.
- Must be available to work shifts exceeding 8 hours as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Possess the ability to distinguish colors and lift/carry up to 80 lbs., both of which are critical for effectively performing job duties.
- Proficient in maintaining electronic records of daily tasks and repair orders, organized by specific equipment.
- Alert and aware of surroundings, including equipment and traffic, when operating a Road Department vehicle.
- Capable of following instructions while strictly adhering to safety and maintenance standards.
