The purpose of this position is to performs traffic signal and street lighting systems troubleshooting, corrective repairs, preventative maintenance, controller installation and modifications, traffic control, camera installation, managing inventory of traffic control devices, street signage, traffic signal and lighting parts, and various work for necessary and required maintenance, repair, or installation of city traffic signal and street lighting systems for the Public Works Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Install, repair, and maintain City owned traffic signals, street lighting, electrical signage, high mast lighting, high mast cameras at City owned facilities, roadways and parking lots.
Perform diagnostic testing, installation, scheduled maintenance, and emergency repairs to traffic signals, street lighting, electrical signage, and miscellaneous City owned facilities.
Provide guidance for traffic control at City managed job sites and special events. This may include setup, deliver and pickup of barricades, changeable message boards and other traffic control devices.
Maintain comprehensive inventory of critical parts and tools for traffic control devices, street signage, traffic signals and lighting
Retain accurate records of work orders, service manuals, etc.
Identify new technologies, equipment, and processes to improve service delivery.
Continue training and certification programs to improve technical knowledge and skills.
Knowledgeable of appropriate safety standards, procedures and equipment.
Mandatory attendance and participation in: rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, civil emergencies, severe weather events including flooding and snow removal operations, special events, and call-outs.
Minimum Training and Experience Required
Licensed Electrician preferred, but is not mandatory; individual must be knowledgeable of and have experience with direct current low voltage, single and triple phase AC electric. Typical currents encountered range from 4mA DC to 4160v AC.
Must be able to trouble shoot and analyze electrical problems within the traffic signal and street lighting systems.
Minimum five (5) years of experience working on traffic signals, street lighting or similar electrical systems preferred.
Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsements required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certification required as a condition of employment and continued employment
Computer skills and knowledge using Microsoft Office programs.
Physical Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Ability to operate equipment and machinery with some requiring complex adjustments, such as bucket truck, crane truck, trencher, computer terminal, drafting instruments and shovels.
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as drawing and assembling.
Ability to perform difficult manual labor for prolonged periods: in severe weather, wet or humid conditions, and in the presence of moderately loud noise as well as fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals; while, either alone or in combination thereof, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds, a minimum distance of 10 feet.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; as well as ability to distinguish between some sounds and smells.
Ability to climb ladders and perform duties at a high elevation of up to 100ft height utilizing proper personal protective equipment PPE and technique.
