Role Overview

The Human Resources Generalist plays a critical role in upholding the presence of HR within the Company. They will engage in a wide array of human resource activities, including, but not limited to recruitment and onboarding, benefits and disability management, training and employee development, workplace investigations, workplace policy enforcement, performance management, and general workplace reporting. Their main purpose is to manage the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department. They will coordinate the implementation of services, policies, programs, and recruitment activities. They will assist and advise Supervisors and Management on Human Resources issues including employee and labour relations.

Responsibilities

Employee Relations

• Conduct regular site visits, ensuring adequate HR presence in the field, assessing employee engagement, soliciting employee feedback, addressing employee concerns, and delivering company communications.

• Serve as a mediator in resolving workplace conflicts and promote a positive work environment.

• Provide guidance and support to management and employees on HR policies and procedures.

• Facilitate communication between employees and management to address concerns.

• Conduct regular site visits, ensuring adequate HR presence in the field, assessing employee engagement, addressing employee concerns, and delivering company communications.

• Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with the Union (IUOE Local 955) and oversees adherence to wages, working hours, and other articles within the collective agreement.

Workplace Investigations

• Thoroughly investigate and report on all employee relations issues on matters such as, but not limited to misconduct, harassment, or other workplace issues.

• Ensure investigations are carried out with discretion, fairness, and in compliance with legal and company standards.

• Prepare detailed reports and recommend appropriate actions based on investigation findings.

HR Information System Management

• Maintain the operation and maintenance of the HRIS to ensure data accuracy and functionality.

• Complete reporting to Colas Canada by the required deadlines.

Training and Development

• Implement training programs that align with company goals and employee career paths.

• Working with the HR team, critically review, identify and recommend internal employees for training and development opportunities.

Talent Management

• Independently or with support of other HR team members, deploy appropriate recruitment tactics aimed to fill job vacancies in a timely manner.

• Communicate with Hiring Managers to determine job vacancies on an ongoing basis.

• Work with management to facilitate employee appraisals and development plans.

• During peak season, assisting the HR Administrator with hourly recruitment, rehires & layoffs of seasonal employees, and hourly benefit administration.

Strategic HR:

• Works in collaboration with the Colas Canada group of companies and the Colas Western HR Team to build relationships, align programs & policies, and implement improvements and changes.

• Contribute to the development of HR strategies that support the company’s goals.

• Assist in managing organizational change to ensure a smooth transition for employees.

• Must adhere to the principles identified in the Company’s Code of Ethics and continuously examine situations in light of these principles.

Safety and Teamwork

• Positively promote and participate in the Company safety program and adhere to all safety requirements including the Goal Zero Initiative.

• Participate as an integral member of the team, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.

• Collaborate with project teams on other special initiatives, as required.

• Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Certifications

• Bachelor degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.

• CPHR designation or working towards.

• Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license, or equivalent.

Work Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a HR role, with preference for experience in the construction industry or related field.

• Comprehensive understanding of HR practices, employment legislation, and compliance requirements.

• Experience working with HRIS, such as SuccessFactors or JD Edwards is considered an asset.

• Knowledge and experience conducting workplace investigations.

• Experience with labour relations and building relationships with a unions considered an asset.

• Experience with benefit administration and disability case management is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

• Overtime as required.

• Travel within the greater Edmonton area is required.

• Work is performed in an indoor setting and may include a combination of standing, sitting, and walking. Sitting for extended periods of time is required.

• During field visits, work is conducted in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, asphalt, and construction site hazards.

• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

• Work involves a high degree of concentration, accuracy, calculations, problem-solving, and working under time constraints.

• Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate PPE is required when present at any construction site.

• Work involves dealing with confidential information.

• Must comply with the company’s and client site’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.

• Must adhere to the principles identified in the company’s Code of Ethics.

• Must apply to all company policies.
