Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Manager-Electric Line Engineering or designee, the employee shall perform the necessary duties of the Electric T & D engineering group to ensure the goals and functions of the section and the department are carried out. The employee shall perform any and all technical work as may be deemed necessary by the supervisor in the day-to-day operation of the department's business.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Electric System Designer I:
Designs residential, commercial, and industrial electrical line extensions and services to provide service to new customer.
Reviews plats and plans from developers or other agencies for availability, adequacy, and location of electric facilities/services and possible conflicts.
Designs relocations and adjustments to City Utilities' (CU) electric facilities as required for highway and street widening projects, sewer projects, or any related type of project requiring relocations or adjustments.
Modifies or upgrades CU's existing electrical facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial customers due to loading or system changes, building additions, or other construction activities.
Prepares job sketches, drawings, material estimates, cost estimates, authorizations, and construction labor estimates.
Prepares engineering drawings for construction of facilities to upgrade and/or maintain the reliability of the transmission and distribution system.
Reviews projects for compliance to city, state, and national codes.
Designs whiteway and street lighting systems.
Design work referenced above is subject to the approval of a Registered Professional Engineer to assure compliance with federal, state, or local requirements.
Assists as Contractor Assistance Personnel as needed. This work may be during or after normal working hours.
Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
Electric System Designer II:
**In addition to the Electric System Designer I, an Electric System Designer II has increased ownership in the tasks and responsibilities listed above. The following will be expected of the Electric System Designer II:
Reviews, updates, and prepares electric construction standards as directed.
Analyzes various items of material as may be required to establish approved vendors or equipment suppliers for material used by operating department.
Reviews requests for attachment to CU's electric facilities by others. Makes recommendations to resolve possible conflicts and assure conformance to all applicable codes.
Assists in Emergency Operations Center (Base 5), as Contractor Assistance Personnel, and/or as Duty Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Electric System Designer I:
High school graduate or equivalent is required.
Bachelor of Science degree in industrial technology or related technical field is preferred.
Two years of college course work in industrial technology or related technical field, or comparable work experience is required.
Experience with AutoCAD or comparable design software is preferred.
Six months of technical level work in engineering or some similar support function is preferred.
Experience in electric distribution and field-type work involving streets, grades, and subdivisions is preferred.
Electric System Designer II:
**In addition to the Electric System Designer I, the following will be expected of the Electric System Designer II:
Experience with AutoCAD is required.
A minimum of three years of experience in an engineering design or support role is required.
One year experience in electric distribution and field-type work involving streets, grades, and subdivisions is required.
Licensing/Certification:
Must have a valid Missouri Driver’s License (Minimum Class F).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of:
o AutoCAD and drafting techniques.
o Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), network file structures, file manipulations, plotting configurations, and other basic PC skills.
- Ability to:
o Plan, organize, and coordinate technical work.
o Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
o Work courteously with customers, co-workers, and individuals in other departments.
o Work under pressure and meet close deadlines.
o Interface with outside agencies at all levels.
o Learn and consistently follow set workflow processes.
Physical Requirements:
Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer. Ability to visually differentiate between color-coded lines and symbols associated with AutoCAD and/or graphic design tools.
Working Conditions:
Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside field work in all weather conditions. Duty Supervisor or Emergency restoration work may require extended hours in unfavorable weather conditions at any time of the day or night.
Miscellaneous Requirements:
Must pass the Electric System Designer II test to be considered for the Electric System Designer II position.
Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
TESTING:
Testing may be required.
