City of Springfield Fire Repairs Supervisor in Springfield, Massachusetts

Fire Repairs Supervisor Responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a staff of journeyman mechanics engaged in repairing and maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and tools, and for performing related administrative work. Work is performed with technical independence under general direction of the Fire Chief with review through conferences and reports, and requires the exercise of considerable initiative and judgment in adapting standard trade practices to specialized departmental requirements and standards. Supervision is ordinarily exercised over a group of subordinates. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and tools used in repairing and maintaining both standard motor vehicles and specialized fire apparatus and equipment. Thorough knowledge of the operation of all types of fire apparatus and equipment, and ability to instruct fire fighters in this knowledge. Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines, gasoline and diesel. Considerable knowledge of common practices, materials, and tools used in the building trades. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Working knowledge of current trends, improvements, and prices in the field of fire apparatus and equipment. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of skilled mechanics. Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions in both standard motor vehicles and specialized fire apparatus and equipment. Ability to prepare, interpret, and work from sketches and blueprints. Ability to maintain and prepare reports from divisional records. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, departmental personnel, and fire equipment sales reps. Skill in the use and care of tools employed in all phases of the work. Ability to plan, assign and supervise repair of all fire department ladders including aerial ladders. Ability to plan, assign and supervise repair of fire department pumps, booster, main pumps and auxiliary pumps. Considerable knowledge of fire department self contained breathing apparatus. Ability to plan, assign and supervise body repair on all types of fire apparatus and booster tanks. Ability to plan, assign and supervise related tasks in repairing and maintaining Fire Department buildings. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college level courses in automotive or mechanical engineering. Minimum of five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including considerable experience in repairing heavy duty automotive equipment, preferably fire apparatus.
