Hanson is seeking candidates for our Water Resources Internship programs. We have an opportunity in our corporate headquarters in Springfield, Illinois.

Our Water Resources discipline is made up of engineers that perform hydrologic and hydraulic model studies in support of the planning, design and permitting for dams, water supply reservoirs, levees/flood control structures, bridges, roadways, airports and other water control and stormwater projects.

General Assignments: Interns will perform routine water resources engineering tasks using standard procedures under supervision of professional Water Resources Engineers and may assist Hanson engineers, designers and technicians in disciplines related to their field of study.

Interns will typically support one or more experienced professional engineers in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of water resources . Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Hanson community and with fellow interns. Internships may require travel to suppliers, customers, or other Hanson locations. Interns will also be required to work a 40 hour work week.

Key Responsibilities: Water Resources interns will be expected to perform the following key responsibilities with assistance from a Hanson professional:

  • Data development using survey, LiDAR, GIS and CAD

  • Research of local regulatory requirements specific to the project

  • Definition of hydrologic parameters and calculation of design discharge rates using various methodologies

  • Development of hydraulic analyses using calculations and computer models such as HY-8, HEC-RAS, XP-SWMM, StormCAD and ICPR

  • Documentation for quality assurance

  • Report development in support of project deliverables

  • Permitting application development in support of project permitting

  • Preparing plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates

  • Gathering and/or providing data for the preparation of engineering or environmental reports and studies

  • Utilize engineering software packages such as ArcMAP, Microstation and HEC-RAS

  • Conducting field investigations and/or survey assistance in order to gather information

  • Performing related duties such as writing memoranda, letters or general reports; collecting and correlating engineering data; maintaining records; attending meetings; and operating technical equipment

Qualifications:

Intern must be actively enrolled in a relevant field of study such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Coastal Engineering. The ideal candidate will have successfully completed their sophomore or junior year and be actively enrolled in an accredited 4-year college or university.

Key requirements are listed but not limited to the following:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Valid driver’s license
