In this Scientific Senior Director role you will lead a team that is responsible for driving the neuroscience portfolio by providing platforms and technologies that be utilized for target validation, biomarker identification and supporting SAR in drug discovery programs. You will work closely with our colleagues within Neuroscience as well as in other drug discovery functions e.g. Medicinal Chemistry, Molecular Pharmacology etc. Your group will be instrumental for us to continue building a transformational Neuroscience portfolio to develop novel treatments for Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Diseases. This will require excellent communication and teamwork skills, an appetite for innovation, and a keen attention to detail and organization. You should have considerable drug discovery experience, a sense of purpose and drive, and be mindful of the considerable unmet medical need and imperative to generate impactful therapeutics in Neuroscience. An understanding of the critical importance to translate insights from biology into the clinic including develop biomarkers to aid in patient selection, demonstrate target modulation, and efficacy & safety in the clinic.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Acts as an accomplished leader who creates buy-in within their group to the Disease Area Stronghold (DAS)/JRD strategy by bridging silos.

  • Manage execution of research programs for Neuroscience to meet exploratory research objectives and support product development, including identifying and validating novel druggable targets for the treatment of Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative diseases that are aligned with our Disease Area Strategy.

  • Provide scientific and technical expertise to scientific staff to advance high-quality research program that generates timely results that are decision making across the development cycle.

  • Develops and implements research proposals on the development and evaluation of new or improved programs and/or assay platforms.

  • Authors and peer reviews scientific research papers and submits materials for patent applications.

  • Provides advice and guidance to scientific leadership to help guide and shape DAS and associated strategies.

  • Represents J&J at industry conferences and associations and expected to build partnerships and relationships within the scientific community as a recognized thought leader.

  • Collaborating closely within the Global Biology function and with other functions, including but not limited to, Data Sciences, Discovery Technology & Molecular Pharmacology and In Silico Discovery to integrate data from human cell models, human omics data, and other datasets coupled to AI and machine learning.

  • Build and mentor a highly motivated team that delivers well-defined objectives.

  • Effective oral and written communication to ensure alignment across functions and within the neuroscience department.

  • Maintains a high degree of understanding of external environment including:

  • approaches to accelerate drug development using high dimensionality data (e.g., high content imaging, transcriptomics and proteomics data) combined with advanced analytics

  • value of human data in precision drug development including molecular datasets and human cell models

Qualifications

Required:

  • A PhD degree with a minimum of 12 years of experience in Neuroscience research or 9 years of demonstrable experience in Pharmaceutical R&D.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the drug discovery process.

  • Designs and executes advanced biology experiments and may guide scientific staff to ensure a high-quality research program that generates timely decision-making results.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong internal network with cross-functional groups required to operationalize and drive portfolio progression

  • Tangible experience in leading people of varying levels and experience within a matrix environment including setting goals, holding others accountable, managing poor performance, and developing others to reach their full potential.

  • Proactively creates a purpose driven environment by aligning Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives with the strategies and goals of the team and enterprise.

  • Broadens external scientific visibility and reputation of J&J by publications and participating in scientific seminars and discussion forums.

  • Develops and implements research proposals on the development and evaluation of new/improved areas of biology/technology or experimental techniques/platforms.

Preferred:

  • Experience in managing operational aspects of their teams (e.g., budget, performance, and compliance), as well as implementing workforce and succession plans to meet business needs.

  • Ability to initiate and drive external collaborations with academic, Contract Research Organization (CRO), or biotech partners.

  • In vivo experience including electrophysiology/EEG

  • Experience working with human cell models to develop a platform used identify and validate novel druggable targets for Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatry disease.
