WSP USA Transmission Engineer - Principal Level in Spokane, Washington
This Opportunity
WSP in the US is seeking a Transmission Engineer- Principal Level to join our Overhead Transmission design team. This position is posted in multiple WSP office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location.
The successful applicant will be responsible for leading assigned projects and for maintaining and improving client relationships. They will also be expected to help develop and grow new technical service areas. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as leadership competence in working with clients and mentoring and supervising team members assigned to projects. Assigned projects will include complex transmission projects and programs including lengths in excess of 100 miles and multiple line segments, operating voltages up to 765kV, and oversight of large teams with diverse skill sets. Importantly, this position is expected to facilitate the growth and development of our lattice tower design and detailing service.
Your Impact
Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the design, implementation, and administration of engineering discipline’s project and program involvement within the organization.
Lead the most complex and largest scale electrical engineering projects within the engineering discipline, ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring internal and external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance and profitability, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
All aspects of transmission line design projects including new lines, relocations, rebuilds, upgrades, structure replacements, and fiber optic additions
Lead transmission design efforts with projects ranging from 12kV-765kV
Prepare and check design deliverables including plan and profiles drawings, material selection, and construction specifications
Perform quality reviews for both internal and subcontractor deliverables
Prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints
Manage and develop project proposals, estimates, schedules, and bids
Evaluate design options, criteria, and routes for technical merit
Understand construction standards and requirements for high voltage line work
Coordinate with contractor and subcontractors to ensure client satisfaction
Oversee internal vision and mission for the engineering discipline, ensuring alignment with business operations strategy, and maintaining that certifications, accreditations, and client value ratings are continuously improved.
Lead engineering discipline meetings and continuing educational opportunities for area of responsibility, providing updates and recommendations to staff that ensure all appropriate measures are taken to foster innovation, development, and quality project delivery within the discipline.
Provide senior leadership for proposals and project work scopes, pricing, budget, and performance metrics for the engineering discipline.
Interpret and summarize data, including reports and documents for complex projects and initiatives that result in sound engineering and regulatory conclusions.
Provide discipline leadership to multi-disciplinary project teams and contribute to providing high level strategic advice to clients.
Provides performance guidance and proactive leadership to assigned managers and staff.
Develop high-level business contacts and a client base for providing high level electrical engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities, and cross-selling of other WSP capabilities.
Remain current in latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or civil engineering from an accredited university
15+ years of relevant post education experience in electrical engineering and infrastructure design for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Experience in the design of overhead High Voltage and Extra High Voltage transmission lines including route selection, line and structure spotting, structure design and analysis, and development of construction bid packages
Understanding of NESC and GO-95
Experience with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-TOWER, and PLS-Lite
Experience using the Microsoft Office software suite
Proficiency with PLS-TOWER, ATADS, and other lattice tower analysis and design tools
Proficiency in the creation and interpretation of new lattice tower design layouts, detailing requirements, erection and detailed shop drawings
Extensive advanced proficiency with infrastructure design.
Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to manage staff, and effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
Understanding of ANSI, ASTM, ASCE, and IEC standards
Extensive experience in recruiting, mentoring and training a team of technical professionals
Strategic lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exits.
Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
Advanced knowledge and proficiency with office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, WIN IGS, Inventor, AutoCADD electrical), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools used in the corporate environment.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in engineering.
A Structural Engineering license and California Professional Engineering license (PE) are both considered a plus
Experience with MFAD, and Microsoft Project is strongly preferred
Knowledge of transmission line routing, field program planning, project management, EPC projects, and line construction
Distribution/underbuilds design experience is a plus
